User:Ytmndfangirl/Crypto bro glossary (draft)
B[edit]
Blockchain[edit]
The underlying 19th-century technology behind all cryptocurrency. Is known to be much less efficient than typical SQL systems, which also offer the ability to actually delete data, among other things which blockchains don’t. Also horrible for the environment. Is lately being used as a buzzword that could mean anything.
Buy the dip[edit]
An exhortation to keep buying more crypto, even during a market downturn or even crash. Also used in “meme stock” subreddits, so check context.
D[edit]
Decentralized/decentralization[edit]
This originally referred to services like Mastodon and IPFS that fit the dictionary definition of “decentralized”, but is now a buzzword used by crypto-bros to refer to anything involving a blockchain; which is ironic, as several prominent crypto sites like OpenSea are highly centralized. Check context, as there may still be a few people using the actual dictionary definition.
DeFi[edit]
Decentralized Finance. A word coined by crypto-bros as a way to rebrand the toxic concept of cryptocurrency, in the same way that “white nationalism” is a (failed) rebranding of Neo-Nazism.
E[edit]
.eth[edit]
A fake TLD which functions as a sort of personal “dark web” for crypto bros. Often used in Twitter handles (like “foobar.eth”), letting you know exactly who to block.
F[edit]
Fiat[edit]
Any currency with actual value. Used mainly to deflect criticisms of crypto.
Fren[edit]
Used as a dogwhistle to refer to other crypto-bros (e.g. “gm frens”). Also an alt-right dogwhistle, which indicates the overlap between crypto-pushers and literal Nazis. We’d tell you to “check context”, but both groups that use the term are really bad anyway, and you should probably block members of either (or both) from your social media.
G[edit]
GM[edit]
Stands for “good morning”. Used as a dogwhistle to communicate to other crypto-bros.
H[edit]
Have fun staying poor[edit]
Usual crypto-bro response to any criticism of crypto.
HODL[edit]
Either a misspelling of “hold” (as in “hold on”), or an acronym of “hold on for dear life”. Essentially means that “I will never sell my crypto assets, even if there’s a market crash”, which is poor financial advice. Also used in “meme stock” subreddits, so check context.
M[edit]
Metaverse[edit]
This word is supposed to refer to virtual reality worlds like Second Life and VRChat, but is often used by crypto-bros as a buzzword for anything involving a blockchain. Check context, as it could also be referring to actual virtual reality technology with no blockchains involved.
N[edit]
NFT[edit]
- See: Non-fungible tokens
Non-Fungible Token. The latest crypto trend: essentially a fancy hypertext receipt.
NGMI[edit]
An acronym for “not gonna make it”, used to discount any all criticisms of crypto. See also “have fun staying poor” and “WAGMI”.
Nocoiner[edit]
A pejorative term used by crypto-bros against crypto skeptics.
R[edit]
Right-clicker[edit]
A pejorative used by NFT bros against people who right-click save images of NFTs to troll crypto users.[1]
T[edit]
To the moon[edit]
An expression of hope that a cryptocurrency or NFT collection will become extremely valuable in the future: ex. “dogecoin to the moon”. Also used in “meme stock” subreddits, so check context.
W[edit]
WAGMI[edit]
An acronym for “we are all gonna make it”, usually used in Twitter bios or Tweets as a means for crypto-bros to identify each other, similar to the purpose that “AYAK” and “AKIA” (reportedly) serve for the KKK.
web3[edit]
The supposed “next step” after Web 2.0. Originally referred to actual decentralized technologies like IPFS, but has been perverted by crypto-bros to refer to any web app involving a blockchain. This may be used as a general buzzword, and there are a few people still using it for decentralized systems, as well as some people using it for the W3C’s vision of a Semantic Web, so check context.
