Formatting HALP[edit]

I'd like the pictures to stay in their individual sections, rather than flowing over. A little halp plz-αmεσ (orator) 00:53, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

I don't see a problem. Did you already fix it? --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:36, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
I did :-). Thanks though!! For the record the code is <br clear="all"/>-αmεσ (orator) 01:39, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

we've got it in a template: {{clear}} (If in doubt read my excellent help pages :) ) SusanG 02:06, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

Way to many keystrokes Susan! At work I implemented {{-}} (think of it as a line across the page) for clear=all, as well as {{L}} for clear=left and {{R}} clear=right (of course the lower case versions work as well). Jollyfish.gifGenghis Marauding 04:25, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
Ha! -twasn't mine: just the Help page - I found it by chance (it doeth what it sayeth & is probably easier for infrequent users to remember. The object of Templates is to make life easier after all.) SusanG 09:05, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

Small world[edit]

My brother lives in New York City, too. Although he's Jewish, so I wonder what he would have to offer on this perspective. --Star of David.png Radioactive afikomen Please ignore all my awful pre-2014 comments. 01:36, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

The Jewish population of New York is entirely different w/r/t levels of religiosity. It ranges from the visibly atheist to the visibly Hassidic, of course. My girlfriend's Jewish too; I wonder how she sees it... as in, how the Jews contribute to the total mix of religiosity. Let's both ask :-)-αmεσ (orator) 01:39, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

On a typical day, one can expect to encounter at least the above display, and between one and five greeters, handing out white paper pamphlets with the heading "RAPTURE."

Goddamn sploicers. Will they ever learn? --מְתֻרְגְּמָן שְׁלֹום

Formatting[edit]

Ames, the ultra large pictures seem a bit CP-ish (where a large picture is used to mask lack of content). WP tends to be a bit more restrained, after all, in a wiki clicking on them makes them full size. Just my view of course. Jollyfish.gifGenghis Marauding 04:31, 6 April 2008 (EDT)

In this case the main point of the article is the pictures so I think it is ok. - Icewedge 04:45, 6 April 2008 (EDT)
I am not criticising the content, but there is a problem with layout when using portrait images. With the thumb tag images are ususally all scaled to a width and portrait images can then be very tall if you use the same width. If you constrain the size by putting 400x400px (this is not a typo for 400px400px) instead of just 400px then the portrait height is constrained to the same size as the width for landscape. Personally I think 300x300px looks much better, but then I'm only an amateur graphic designer. Also, I don't believe the main point of the article is the pictures, Ames' comments are what counts. My CP jibe is because of my own distaste for their front page. People post overly large pictures (largely irrelevant) and make overuse of bold to hype their own posting, which they are then reluctant to remove making it too long. Sometimes a single large picture can be attention grabbing but too many gives the appearance of a cheap tabloid. Our front page is much more professional. This reminds me of a movie[edit]

Salvation! starring Exene Cervenka (of the band X) came out during the 1980s televangelist scandals...set in Staten Island, NY. The movie has a very funny opening scene where the televangelist describes the sorry state of Christianity in New York: "New York City is the least Christian city in America..Christians rank a distant fourth!" Catholics are #3, Jews ("those bankers") are #2, and "Number one, the number one religion in New York City is, atheism. Atheism: Worship of teh DEVIL!" Haw haw.
