2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Education[edit]

The reason for uneducated populations in most of history is rather less sinister than you seem to indicate. Education is expensive and unnecessary for peasant farmers, so the farmers remained uneducated.--MountainTiger 11:56, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

The rulers have often been as much under the priestly thumb as the rest. (Henry VIII notwithstanding) There's nothing like the threat of eternal damnation to quiet down the rabble. Keepoff the grass 12:15, 31 July 2007 (CDT)

And of course, there's the ban on 'modern language' bible back then. Stop 'em larnin - stop em arguin. Keepoff the grass 12:43, 31 July 2007 (CDT)
