New comments[edit]
There is evidence that celibacy can cause psychological harm, see John Waller on how distress and pious fear have led to bizarre outbreaks across the ages and Sexual Repression: The Malady That Considers Itself the Remedy as just 2 examples. There is no clear evidence that spiritual benefits of celibacy outweigh the harm done, therefore spiritual, philosophical or moral growth is supposed rather than certain. Proxima Centauri (talk) 16:41, 17 August 2012 (UTC).
- Are you kidding me? 1) the people doing the abstinence are the ones who have a right to define what it does for them, not you. 2) of course there is value to it. I've done it myself. Just because you see no reason to not be celibate does not mean normal people do not find value in it. 3) your study is not exactly academic. It is one person's informed opinion that you cannot cure SEXUAL PROBLEMS with sexual abstinence. (ie., if you have a drive to rape women, being celibate does not help your drive). It has nothing to do with spiritual moral or ethical growth due to celibacy. It helps if you read your references carefully, and see if they actually support your argument, or if they are just tangentially touching your argument.--GodotIz a sekret Kristian 16:46, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Is your claim that you have been celibate more reliable than your misquote of Austin Cline? Proxima Centauri (talk) 16:50, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
Incidentally I personally have never heard or read of an atheist practicing celibacy. Did you believe some religion at the time you claim you were celibate? Proxima Centauri (talk) 17:33, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- I've never heard of it, so it can't be true! --Mikal Harass Follow 18:01, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- FFS Proxy, are you ever going to shut up about this misquoting of something about sophisticated theology? & You've never of an atheist remaining celibate? Are you serious? Maybe you think atheists spontaneously start believing in Gods if they don't have sex for more than a few days, huh? WeaseloidMethinks it is a Weasel 18:16, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Celibacy means abstaining from sex over more than a few days for spiritual reasons. Atheists may abstain form sex for a variety or reasons but that's not celibacy. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:28, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- From the article you linked to: "usually in the context of holding some religious office or for private spiritual reasons." USUALLY. that does not mean "only." You're as bad as Ken. SophieWilder 18:35, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- Prox, our own article talks about famous people (incidentally atheists) who are celibate for "some reason other than religious". It's a way to grow. It's a way to focus your life on other things. It's a sacrifice you give to other parts of your life. And you really need to stop relying on "atheist websites" to get your information. It's fine for one point of view, but you are not back tracking, which is critical to any article. GodotIz a sekret Kristian 18:57, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

On the 12th August you wrote that on my talk page. Also on the 12th August I asked you to give a link. As of now it’s the 18th August and I still haven’t got that link. If I gave a link where anyone wrote, "I have read all (emphasis mine) of the sophisticated theology and none of it makes any sense" Godot can easily repeat that link and we will all know she’s exonerated. The longer I must wait for that link the more sure I become that Godot really did misquote Austin Cline. Proxima Centauri (talk) 10:50, 18 August 2012 (UTC) The dates, 12th August and 18th August were copied from my computer in the UK, readers in other time zones may find different dates but the gap will be similar. Currently it links to an Onion article, which is a satirical website. I don't think it's appropriate to include. 202.36.244.185 (talk) 02:24, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
