Not a bad start. --Possible Goat (talk) 01:37, 17 August 2020 (UTC)

Aaaand one of my family members is a COVID Denialist. Cool.[edit]

I read this article and his reason to believe COVID doesn´t exist immediately pooped up in my head: basically it exists just because the media is simply creating the reality (clever, I´ll give him that) of the virus for money (even though they don't even need to do that), creating fear and anxiety when really: it´s all in our heads, obviously! Like, three other of my family members got infected and even had to spend time at the hospital and he says that it was not COVID despite the fact that everybody else remembers it so! And of course he refuses to take the two vaccine shots too.

So maybe this would be a nice thing to debunk here, probably it's one of the more common forms of denialism about this virus.

Do you happen to have a source for the specific claim? In general, yes that does sort of include the whole thing, but diving into a specific claim (like if the source says it was created by CNN), would allow us to tailor a better refutation.-RipCityLiberal (talk) 20:23, 13 December 2021 (UTC)
Well, I couldn't find actual specific conspiracist claims but I found these, if they are any good:

- https://www.cnbc.com/2020/06/17/social-media-usage-linked-to-belief-in-coronavirus-conspiracy-theories.html (it briefly mentions about people believing it's a hoax) - https://www.thehealthy.com/infectious-disease/coronavirus-hoax-false-claim/ (some debunking) - https://www.amazon.es/Covid-19-Greatest-History-startling-takeover/dp/B08KH3R8NG - https://www.nytimes.com/2020/09/28/world/europe/europe-coronavirus-protests.html - https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-data-pandemic/fact-check-uk-government-data-does-not-show-pandemic-is-a-hoax-idUSL1N2MS1ZR - https://www.reuters.com/article/uk-factcheck-covid-hoax-eliminate-trump-idUSKBN27S31E - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=elf6h_K4JH0 (this last one even has a left-wing denialist example).

Also, out of the topic but you might want to check this out: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plandemic. Basically this film is like Zietgeist but for COVID. It has already been debunked to death apparently.

So, 3 years later, we kinda have a conclusive data: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/[edit]

CASES OVERALL: 704,000,358

CLOSED CASES: 681,975,747

Cases which had an outcome: 674,971,013 (99%) Recovered / Discharged 7,004,734 (1%) Deaths

As you can see on graphs - cases are almost at zero for quite some time. At this point, at least this iteration of pandemic is finished. And the data is, rather puzzling.

I am not a Trump supporter, nor am I a, quote-en-quote, denialist. But the mere fact that we ended up with 1% mortality - should not be as easily discarded.

Generally speaking, there is widespread consensus that this number is under-reported to some degree. Nonetheless, for a respiratory pandemic, I do think that things worked out much better than past pandemics. Scientists were able to get a vaccine for the pandemic in record time (a little over a year!), and I do think that this helped tremendously.
We're now possibly (probably?) at the point where COVID-19 has evolved into a virus more like influenza, where it usually is more annoying than fatal. Even influenza can be deadly, however, and COVID-19 is still killing people in the US (largely older adults, like influenza). This persistent anti-vaccination culture is going to be a thorn in United States life longevity for a while, methinks.
Donald Trump's role in this is quite a ying-yang. He did sign off on Operation Warp Speed,Wikipedia which helped make the rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines possible. Alas, his administration proceeded to botch the COVID-19 response by downplaying public health measures and saying a few ridiculous things regarding "alternative treatments" popular with the conspiracy nuts. Nonetheless, he's never been 100% anti-vaccines (a stance which has pissed some conspiracy nuts off, but hey...) BobJohnson (talk) 15:52, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
To what extent is the issue - that percentage of cases for which COVID was a contributory cause of death (possibly very minor)/shortened the lifespan of people who would have died of other causes anyway? And what about the flu viruses 'extincted by' anti-COVID measures? Anna Livia (talk) 18:27, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
