On Irish Nationalism[edit]

The Irish for an ethnic Irish person is a Gael (pronounced Gwhale). The Gael's origin myth places them as the sixth people to arrive in Ireland with two other arrivals already well established (Tuatha Dé Danann (from some magic land)and the Fir Bolg (who were said to be from Greece). As well as that the Island already had its own inhabitants called the Fomhóraigh (formorians, said to be giants, mostly already dealt with by the Tuatha Dé Danann).

Basically Gaelic myth says the Gaels aren't the original inhabitants of Ireland at all (the book on the origin myth is called Leabhar Gabhála Éireann, Book of the Getting/Capturing of Ireland) and wouldn't be very useful to any nationalist and certainly doesn't suit the more xenophobic kind (doesn't stop them from having Irish twitter handles though). Which is good. Féinléiriú (talk) 18:00, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Excuse me I forgot to add that this book was written by a christian monk who tried to trace the lineage of the Irish people to Moses (Book wasn't written until 11th century). I believe the book starts with a disclaimer that the writer doesn't actually believe in the books contents either. Féinléiriú (talk) 12:07, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

Thanks, I need to find out more about Irish nationalism and its relationship with Gaelic identity. --Annanoon (talk) 11:40, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm not sure the nationalists (as in the fringe bad kind) know a lot about its relationship with Gaelic identity either, I'm struggling to think my self. Look up any Provisional IRA song on youtube and you'll be more likely to see a reference to Celtic football Club than anything Gaelic. Also there's unionists appropriating Cú Culainn as "a defender against the Irish invaders", despite him being a Gaelic myth. Féinléiriú (talk) 23:21, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Celtic-Semitic links[edit]

Pseudolinguistics mentions postulated links between Celtic languages and north African Semitic languages, including Berber. There have been some academic papers in this direction, suggesting influences, but no genetic connection. --Annanoon (talk) 10:56, 20 August 2019 (UTC)
