Talk:Geert Wilders
Sole member WTF[edit]
If he's the "sole member" of the PVV, how come it has so many seats in various legislative bodies? Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 02:23, 29 June 2014 (UTC)
- Traditionally, parties are a "vereniging", which roughly translates to "foundation" or "association", and usually have tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of members, who then vote on important decisions in the party (leaders, programs, etc. it varies by party); but you don't need to be a member to get on the electoral list (& thus get voted on) for the parliament elections, and this organisation is mostly by convention; there is a legal minimum of 1 member (Wilders in this case). Quick Question[edit]
So, what does he have against Romania and Bulgaria? Why does he want them expelled from the EU? And if he wants to withdraw the Netherlands anyway, why does he care who else is in it? Also what does he have against seagulls that he supports the banning of them? 216.227.245.50 (talk) 15:52, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- Eastern European migrants are a common target for anti-immigration activists/Euroskeptics because they are perceived as a flood of cheap labour and a potential ungrateful drain on the welfare state. The same welfare state that these people value so much that they want to gut it at the same time they build a wall around their countries. Peace. AgingHippie (talk) 16:05, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- I have the strong suspicion that he and his buddies are mainly against a very specific kind of Eastern-European immigrants...--ZooGuard (talk) 16:14, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- Oh, no doubt that too. Peace. AgingHippie (talk) 16:19, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- Roma's discrimination as such isn't really an issue in the Netherlands (not like in France). It's just general xenophobia/Dutch jobs for Dutch workers/etc. thing. Wilders wife is from Hungary by the way :-) Carpetsmoker (talk) 17:18, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- Also Wilders is part Indonesian, of which he's in denial of. CorruptUser (talk) 18:26, 4 May 2015 (UTC)
- Ah, okay that makes sense. Thanks guys for answering my question. 216.227.245.50 (talk) 16:43, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

[edit]
Should we add the 'politics'-navbox to the article? He's an obvious islamophobe but also a politician, so that would be appropriate, I think. JorisEnter (talk) 10:30, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- I added it to Party for Freedom the other day, and just added it here (you also forgot to sign your comment btw.) Carpetsmoker (talk) 10:38, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks! JorisEnter (talk) 10:47, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
Fascist?[edit]
Is it really correct to call him a "fascist"? The most precise definition of a fascist is someone who supports totalitarian one-party state, militarist aesthetics, ultra-traditionalism, etc., and Wilders fits none of this. The only thing that he has in common with the far right is his vehemently anti-Islamic views and his support for the Trump; in all other aspects, he seems much closer to classical liberalism. --188.166.91.5 (talk) 20:57, 20 July 2016 (UTC)
- (responding to this older-ish thread because it just came up on my Watchlist from @Rational Dudes recategorization) He's a one-issue populist on Islam. Wilders' stances are infamously short (most parties here write a big fucking book describing all their positions, Wilders publishes a single A4 paper) that mostly just amount to "get rid of Muslim immigration and immigrants, get out of the EU, free money for everyone!". Those specific positions do align to some extent with fascism (specifically the opposition to free speech and freedom of religion, the definition by opposition is his EU + free money), but he is almost diametrically and rather consistently opposed to the more militaristic elements of fascism. You can pretty much see this contrasted with the guys recent contenders in the group "dumb populistic fucks" in the Netherlands; JA21 leans much more on general authoritarian fascism but stops short of actual brown shirts, while Forum voor Democratie is pretty much openly agreeing with nazi ideology these days and has actually gotten in trouble with their youth wings on militaristic nonsense if I recall. Wilders is a very "classic populist" in that regard. Not great at all (dudes absolutely a crank), and obviously missional, but he's not a fascist. -- Techpriest (talk) 17:19, 4 January 2023 (UTC)
- My bad, I assumed he was a fascist since he allied himself with fascist leaders. Rational Dude (talk) 21:12, 5 January 2023 (UTC)
Stopped clock note[edit]
@Rational Dude It's worth pointing out that most of Wilders' recent "Stopped clock" moments are because the PVV has been failing pretty badly at trying to form a local government. They've had to abandon many key points of their program because they otherwise wouldn't even get a seat at the discussion table. I'm not saying there's no legitimacy to them, but they're mostly stopped clock moments out of pure pragmatism. -- Techpriest (talk) 19:06, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Techpriest thank you for letting me know. I wasn’t trying to make them sound better, I just felt that we should at least mention some things they actually got right and be fair where there’s merit, unlike them. Rational Dude (talk) 20:19, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
