What is part of the Great Firewall[edit]
@Bongolian Is it common to also consider censorship of Chinese social media as part of the Great Firewall? Rabbitseatcarrots (talk) 09:26, 28 August 2022 (UTC)
- PEN America regards censorship as part of the Firewall on page 33 of their report Forbidden Feeds.[1] Article 15 of the "Measures for the Administration of Internet Information Services" that justifies the Great Wall, would also seem to imply the necessity of censorship. If China outright blocked popular external social media platforms without providing its own alternatives, it would create an even greater demand for them within China. - I see. I think I was too focused on the technical side. The How section will probably need some work. Thank you, Bongolian. Rabbitseatcarrots (talk) 16:27, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

- I've been thinking that we could merge the "How" and "Weibo" sections together, as in put "Weibo" as a subsection of "How". If we treat the censorship systems of domestic social media and search engines as part of the firewall, the "China's ecosystem of censorship" section doesn't make much sense, as it treats those instances of censorship as separate from the Firewall. I've tried to come up with ways to rework it but honestly I'm thinking of just nuking that section. Rabbitseatcarrots (talk) 07:39, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
- Specifically something like User:Rabbitseatcarrots/sandbox/greatfirewall, though if I could find content on censorship on search engines in China it would be great to add that to the Weibo section and change it's name to something else. I know that censorship at least in search engines tend to increase in politically sensitive events like elections and the Tiananmen anniversary, though I won't add that until I find references. - Yes, that's a reasonable approach. By looking for content on censorship, are you looking for a general description or specific instances? Bongolian (talk) 03:41, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
- Right now I'm looking for sources on specific (targeting specific sites) , but also on more general (removing sites from search results for mentioning Tiananmen) instances of censorship on Baidu's search engine, in order to add to another subsection next to Weibo, however let me know if you know of any other notable instances of censorship.
