"Police Action"[edit]

The term was actually Truman's way of describing the Korean war...PFoster 19:44, 16 October 2008 (EDT)

Oh shoot. Wasn't VN one as well, though? Sure, we call it a "war" but it wasn't legally one. ħumanUser talk:Human 19:50, 16 October 2008 (EDT)
Ask Researcher, he's good at this stuff (my field is African history, not US foreign policy)--but I think that the Gulf of Tonkin resolution made it a real war...PFoster 19:52, 16 October 2008 (EDT)
Not real war - was never "declared" formally by Congress. However, yeah, Tonkin handed over the same kind of dumb blank check that Congress gave GWB back in 2002... Anyway, do ya think the phrase at least works in context?

Johnson the warmonger[edit]

The article makes fun of the description of LBJ as a warmonger and then goes on to say Vietnam was his fault and he used Gulf of Tonikn to escalate a war of choice - rather than that the unclear situation in an election year forced his hand. After all, it was Nixon who bombed Laos, not LBJ. Evil Zionist (talk) 21:52, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

More evidence for him not being a warmonger: https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Lyndon_B._Johnson#Letter_to_Ho_Chi_Minh_.281967.29 Evil Zionist (talk) 22:22, 13 August 2017 (UTC)
It'd be like if Obama took over from Bush after the Iraq war had just begun, but kept with Bush's plan to stay in Iraq long after "mission accomplished". At some point, he'd get the blame. CorruptUser (talk) 22:54, 13 August 2017 (UTC)

A quote[edit]

If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.
