Talk:Quadratic equation
One thing has always bugged me--"Quad" usually means 4, but this is only to the second power. What then makes it "quadratic"? Researcher 18:25, 8 January 2009 (EST)
- Quad as in 'square', as in x^2. For more info quadratic function at wikipedia. --Shagie 18:34, 8 January 2009 (EST)
I Still Hate Quadratic Equations[edit]
I'm a mechanical engineer, and use the quadratic formula all the time, and I still hate it!The Goonie 1 05:56, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- I love it ;) Use it all the time while gardening. ħuman 06:00, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Yeesh, get with the times you fellows. I've had a pocket calculator that can solve quadratics for about a decade now. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 07:46, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- And I have a graphing calculator that can solve them, too. Heck, even some of the CAD/CAM software I use does them. But I still hate quadratic equations. The Goonie 1 03:48, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- But it's so much easier to solve them in your head! No typing involved... ħuman 03:52, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

- However you choose to do them (unless you have someone else do them for you), I still hate quadratic equations. No reason, I just hate doing them. The Goonie 1 04:12, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Imagine a cone. Slice the cone. The equations are all equivalent, it's the angle of the slice that varies. Fall into the curve and fly out. It's all the same to butterflies. ħuman 06:07, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Hmmm, see I wish I was more of a visual person, because I would've thought like that years ago. Ah, the curse of being a hands-on, DIY learner. Hey, you could add that visualization to the solving section as descriptive reasoning. The Goonie 1 22:53, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
- Do you think it would help? ħuman 23:44, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

solving section[edit]
sucks ass, and where does x = -D/b or whatever get set up? The simple truth is, all you have to do is complete the fucking square on ax2 + bx + c = 0 to derive the formula. ħuman 06:15, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, I see, there is a step or two skipped at the end.
- After D = root(b2 - 4ac)/2a, we need to sub back into r1 = -b/2a + D and r2 = -b/2a - D, simplify to one denominator and combine by using +/-. I such at LaTeX but I'll give it a bang... ħuman 20:09, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Mission[edit]
This really is not on-mission... is there a way to put it on mission or would that involve needlessly politicizing this article? As an aside, are there certain categories that are permitted to be off-mission simply because they're necessary to understand on-mission articles? --TheLateGatsby (talk) 14:14, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- Does it matter? I can (just) see the argument for deleting Blaunau Ffestiniog - but does this in any way harm the wiki even if it is not 'on mission'. I vote that it stays as 'harmless'. Bad Faith (talk) 14:19, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- 7th grade math isn't on mission, everyone who is out of 7th grade should have this memorized by now FFS. ТyBother me 14:31, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- Well, I think it matters. Going forward, I'll assume any article with an appropriate navbar is "on-mission". --TheLateGatsby (talk) 14:35, 19 September 2012 (UTC)
- Personally, I'd have all these math stubs linked to ToW. There's no way we can make these things mission related and different. They're only still here because they're what you might call 'rational'. At one time it was a quick way to increase our artcle count but now we should be focussing on better quality on-mission stuff that is different. - I dunno. I suppose I'm easy on the subject. pathetic 17:10, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
- I agree with the evil fascist about what anyone who was paying attention in 7th grade ought to know. No articles link here, except through the {{mathnav}} box. The other Wiki has a pretty good article on it, or so it seems to me. Exterminate, disintegrate, make it go away post-haste. Sprocket J Cogswell (talk) 17:46, 5 November 2012 (UTC)
