Where did that come from?!?[edit]

The SES app, that is. --SpinyNorman (talk) 22:30, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Insomniac...[edit]

Go to bed, dear Jeeves! It's after midnight here in the land of Brittania! (As I'm sure you're aware...) SJ Debaser 23:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

I know, but I work all hours. It's my punishment for frittering away the day annoying PJR. Caffeine is my lover, my mother, my muse and deliverer. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 23:38, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
"Jeremy's right - she's an actual woman!" Yeah, my shitty pedestrian job saw me leaving at one o'clock yesterday morning. SJ Debaser 23:44, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, I at least have the advantage of being able to do my work sitting at home on my sofa, in my underwear. I kind of miss all nighters in a real office though. The enthralling conversations with the security guard, the ready access to a vending machine chock full of snacks and beverages. Those were the days. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 23:48, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

Thank you!!!! That is all.I am eating Toast& honeychat 13:12, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Seconded. Also, that piece deserves a place over here. Redchuck.gif Генгисevolving 18:58, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Absolutely brilliant. I'd agree that it deserves a place here too.--BobNot Jim 19:12, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
As flattering as all this is, I'd rather the energy was spent on hitting PJR hard in his intellectual gonads, such as they are. I'm wondering if together we might be able to put together a few pages chronicling the history of evolution through humble beginnings, and up through key discoveries and cross-confirming experiments. Something to show PJR what real science looks like, and that creation science is a cheap imitation. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 19:36, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
Fourthed on both points. And PJR's "response" was good for a laugh, but not much more. As far as the "history of evolution" thing, basically, the "history of deep time" is that once upon a time, most western scientists, maybe most people, thought the Earth was, oh, maybe 10k years old. Then more and more evidence turned up that simply couldn't be explained that way and other ideas started taking hold, ones which tended to better and better match and explain the data as it came in. Some people just somehow got stuck in the 17th century or so. ħumanUser talk:Human 19:48, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
I'm afraid that I'm not really into writing a history of evolution on ASK for a couple of reasons. 1. Philip is capable of such a level of doublethink that, no matter how good it was, it wouldn't convince him. 2. At the end of the day he has the final say on the editorial content. Given the editorial policy at ASK it would be edited into something supportive of the YEC world-view. (Assuming it was an article.)--BobNot Jim 20:01, 12 August 2009 (UTC)
It needn't be exclusively for aSoK, I think it'd be a nice thing to have to RW too. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 20:19, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Dear Sir,[edit]

I'm sorry this comment is late, it was supposed to arrive earlier in the programme day.

Nuclear visit[edit]

When I was in the sixth form (1961/2 ish) we were treated to a visit to Calder Hall (the world's first nuclear power station to deliver electricity in commercial quantities). All I can remember is that part of the tour included walking across a mesh floor some thirty feet above the reactor floor which triggered my acrophobia. Don't recall any subsequent metering though. The main attraction was that we were with boys from the next door school from whom we were normally totally segregated. I am eating Toast& honeychat 13:34, 25 September 2009 (UTC)

I went to the Trawsfynydd reactor in Wales, but I was a good bit younger than in sixth form, so I don't remember a huge amount from my visit. We got to see the turbine hall, and I remember the reactor floor was in very pretty colours. In fact, I found a picture of it. It's like a giant twister board. I didn't realise that people could actually go in there, but I guess since all that separated us tourists from it was plate glass, I should have guessed. The reactor had a pretty clever storage battery arrangement too, during the night they pumped their coolant water up to the top reservoir and during the day there was a hydro plant in operation to supply more electricity for peak demand. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 13:38, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Heh! I worked for a company (Compair) that had quite a lot to do with that pumping system. We supplied the equipment to dig the tunnels to the top reservoir. For years we had a supply warehouse there. I was stock controller at their central England depot. (small world, innit?). I am eating Toast& honeychat 13:52, 25 September 2009 (UTC)
Totally off topic, but I edited this thread because I found it fascinating. Jeeves, in my reactions to MC and the Star Chamber Trial of the Century, I hope you don't take my deliberations in the contrary position personally. I think you are a great person and an asset to RW in general, but I fundamentally disagree with the lawyerly proposals at RationalWiki:Blocking policy/draft blocking policy addendum. Although, I suspect you meant it as a giant joke to see how silly some of us might get, given appropriate provocation. ħumanUser talk:Human 08:07, 4 October 2009 (UTC)

JoikuSpot[edit]

I noted you mentioning this in the bar. I've been trying to get the trial version working on my Nokia 5800, and it seems to install OK and I configured it OK (aside from it only supporting WEP, which I am pretty much against as one of my hobbies is cracking WEP networks using AirCrack-ng), but when I try to connect to it using vista it churns away for a bit and then says it was unsuccessful when connecting. It knows it's an ad-hoc connection (as it shows the symbol in the network list) so I don't think that's the problem. Any ideas? CrundyTalk nerdy to me 20:03, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

Pass. I blame Windows Vista. Have you tried it sans encryption? Possibly wankdows is putting the key though the password based key derivation function rather than using what you actually typed as key. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 22:16, 4 November 2009 (UTC)

Potential damage[edit]

So by hitting the site what potential damage/issues could hit my pc? I am doing another full scan but my laptop flipped out a bit. AceModerator 01:21, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

No idea. I'd guess whatever they were distributing was either a trojan to add your PC to a botnet for purposes of spamming/DDoSing people or it was blackmail ware. Keep an eye out for unusual volumes of network activity. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 01:23, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Hmmmm, well my network utilization is at about 0.05% currently. Not much happening, plus my McAfee dropped the connection as soon as it hit the site so I'll keep an eye on it. Cheers. AceModerator 01:27, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
You'll want to keep an eye on it at the router. If your PC gets rooted, any data it gives you is suspect. I've no real idea how thorough these rootkits are at hiding their tracks, but I'd guess it at least covers using the network at the lowest level and not reporting to the UI. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 01:29, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

After the tragedy that was Fallout 3[edit]

Fuck you, it was a good game. AceModerator 05:43, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

It wasn't. It was a mediocre game. Entirely too much combat for such a terrible job at AI. Bolt on pseudo-turn based crap to do their best to appease Fallout fans that ends up just being a sort of god mode, so much so that you're almost never going to fire a shot in real time. Stats are pretty much utterly meaningless. Tedious story, terrible voice acting, shallow characterisations. Not enough RPG elements to make it meaty, and nowhere near good enough combat system to make it a good shooter. Just ends up being a "meh" sort of throwaway game. New Vegas did a bit better with the engine they inherited, but needs serious work on the pacing. And don't get me started on the fucking Cazadores. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 06:00, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

HAHAHAHA! Additionally I just discovered Jeeves and Wooster last week, through TOW page on Archer. I watched the Fry and Laurie show and loved every moment of it deeply, I wish that you had made the recommendation more explicitly, for I would have loved to have found it sooner. --Opcn with regards to regarding my regardliness 08:58, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I was never so keen on Fry and Laurie as sketch comedy, but they make just the perfect Jeeves and Wooster. If you're a fan of farce like I am, try 'Allo 'Allo as well. That's also awesome. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 21:24, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
My favorite thing about J&W is how clever Jeeves is, and how wonderfully wodehouse crafted his words. I also really loved Sir Humphrey in Yes Minister. After watching 'Allo 'Allo I'm afraid it hasn't got that quality that I'm looking for. Also, Just FYI I stole the above quoted line on facebook, no attribution, sorry :) --Opcn with regards to regarding my regardliness 02:50, 14 April 2012 (UTC)

Why[edit]

Are you opposed to free speech ?

RE:CP[edit]

Thus saith Markman Here is what Markman said: Why do you care about being people being dicks to each other on CP? As I already told Patmac: "The general view here is that CP is a joke website, that other than a select few of true believers all the editors are trolls and parodists seeking nothing more than their own amusement. If that is the case, why is getting the banhammer on the infamous wiki is seen by some as the equivalent of murder? Shouldn't editing at CP be seen as a game, with blocks being the equivalent of getting shot on CounterStrike?" - ConservapediaMarkman (talk) 02:57, 19 July 2013 (UTC)

Mainly I care because people have the view that all trolls on CP are from here. I don't think that's true, in fact I think almost none of them are, and the ones that are are lurkers who don't really bother to participate in RW as such. Being a complete cock to everyone seems to curry favour with Andy, who values nothing quite so much as a good blocking, but really there's not much of a difference between acting and being in this case. I think it's crass whether you're genuine or a parodist. --JeevesMkII The gentleman's gentleman at the other site 03:07, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
