2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Should we incorporate something of Bill Bryson’s version of “Good Own/Bad Owen”?[edit]

Excellent article that works great as it is. If we were to expand it, would the mob consider the topics that Bill Bryson raised in A Short History of Nearly Everything to be relevant? Bryson focused on Owen’s role in making the Natural History Museum an informative venue for the public, but also on his nasty character, history of taking credit for the discoveries of others and his petty and vindictive campaign against Gideon Mantell,Wikipedia who actually discovered and described the Iguanidon (i.e. the first dinosaur identified). @ScepticWombat Thank you for the compliment, I am the one who created this article. As for your second topic, I am not aware of Bryson's work. Why not add to it yourself? Palaeonictis Fossil beds 16:26, 2 February 2019 (UTC)
@Palaeonictis I might do that, if and when I can find the corresponding quotes/pages (don’t currently have the book on my shelves). I raised it on the talk page, since the article already works well and this additional info might be seen as a bit (too) peripheral to the topic, since it doesn’t directly concern creationism/evolution. @ScepticWombat It's still missional IOW. Just create a new section of the article. Palaeonictis Fossil beds 14:02, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

I find the bit on the Archaeopteryx, slightly inaccurate as it is the first known fossil bird, by reputable encyclopedia:Encyclopedia Britannica — Unsigned, by: 2A00:23C8:6F80:5B00:5946:DE9D:33F:BD42 / talk
