Moderator endorsements[edit]

I'd like this headline to be where the folks here officially or unofficially make their endorsements for Moderator. I hereby endorse the following candidates for moderator:

  • Aboriginal Noise
  • Javascap
  • ListenerX
  • Lumenos (yes, I'm serious)
  • Nutty Roux
  • Weaseloid
  • Π

These are the people who I think would/will make the best moderators. Punky McPunkersen 12:13, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

You're endorsing the guy who needlessly attacked Ty and vandalized his user page?--Brxbrx 16:04, 27 June 2011 (UTC)
Nah, you're right. I change that endorsement to P-Foster. And thus I voted for Foster instead. Punky McPunkersen 12:44, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
I'd like to add that I appreciate your endorsement, Punky. Those who were elected, I hope, will do a bang-up job and not overstep their bounds (whatever those bounds might be). Speakerface 22:08, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
I already voted. I numbered every candidate, but these were my top five:
  1. DickTurpis
  2. P-Foster
  3. Ty
  4. AD
  5. ListenerX
Maratrean 06:58, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
Ty and ListenerX were my top 2. ListenerX made a great fucking case on the campaign page, and I can trust Ty to be level-headed--Brxbrx 17:57, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
Lx, AD and Ace are the ones I really want to see elected. Lx and AD because they are very level headed, Ace because he knows not to take it all too seriously. --Pinetree 23:38, 28 June 2011 (UTC)
I'm interested in the Lumenos reasoning. Someone who has been actively opposed the the set up of the Foundation would be an interesting choice for the position. Armondikov 12:05, 30 June 2011 (UTC)
Simple: sometimes the nuttiest choices are the best choices. In the case of Lumenos, they may be an oddball, but I'm almost certain they'd be sooo good at distracting the fighting parties and confusing them that I'm certain no HCM's would stand up to anything they could throw out. In fact, if you look around Lumeniki enough, you'll see that Lumenos' wacky style is even MarcusCicero-proof. Punky McPunkersen 12:10, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
Lumenos? Nah, he's too weird for me. Like you've said, he's the only proof that aliens from Mars have landed here or something to that effect. Anyways, I'm very dissappointed that Armondikov declined to run. Armondikov and MordantMaenad are, by far, the most level-headed people at RationalWiki. Bob M is also someone who I wish would've accepted the nomination, because he's pretty level-headed and I consider him alomst an ideal gentleman. Lily is also another good choice, IMHO. Conficker 13:15, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
I wiped the precious user rights of 20 people and then tucked-tail and ran off for a month, as well as quitting the Foundation that I really do care about but am apparently too feckless and lazy to do any work for. I don't think I deserve the level-headed sticker for that and that I've been shown to actually snap should show that I shouldn't really be taking any authority, however neutered it ends up as. But mostly, I don't want to be put in a moderator position because I know the limit between where I would and wouldn't step in and do something is considerably lower than most others. I've done moderating on a few forums before and it's always been the case that it's best to deal with things before the flames start flying, otherwise you may as well not bother. A single "fuck you, you cunt!" type comment and I would actually block for an hour. Yet I think there would be a lot of resistance to anyone sticking their neck out before there was an actual real problem and the "fuck you" comments had filled an entire page. I've seen plenty of people say that they're happy to let anarchy rule and if it came down to anarchy ruling again, I just wouldn't fit in and wouldn't want to risk the backlash involved in having a more pro-active moderating stance in a more laissez-faire team. If the standards of all seven mods aren't perfectly in step with each other, it's not going to work. Armondikov 19:12, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
If you had run I would have voted for you. We have some differences of opinion, but you are more sensible that the average RWian. Maratrean 00:49, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Hmmm, I do see the reasoning although not necessarily the conclusion there. Certainly an odd-ball would provide enough distraction, but this isn't a wiki ran exclusively by said odd-ball (neither do we want it to be), so whether that would apply is questionable. I think it would open up to more bickering about whether the election was rigged or just a joke. Armondikov 18:44, 1 July 2011 (UTC)
We should just ban MC and be done with him. Sure, he'll reappear, but we'll ban his socks too. The wiki would have much less drama without that turd--Brxbrx 02:09, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
You can't just ban MC. He contributes so much to the wiki's character. Such a brash move would only serve to prove that RW has become just as authoritarian as conservapedia. Such a move would be comparable to the exile of the Jews from Rome! --86.45.3.123 12:04, 2 July 2011 (UTC)
Yeah, totally the same thing. Armondikov 14:25, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Someone please turn off anonymous editing for a while[edit]

Vandal botnet is at it again... Maratrean 07:55, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I've tried getting ahold of Nx. Hopefully, he'll come help us out. Otherwise, this'll be a long day/night/week. Punky McPunkersen 10:14, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
I take it us getting control of the server has been postponed again? Ty 01:22, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Anybody who isn't tired and has programming ability want to help?[edit]

I need someone to create a program that will place a temporary "lock" on all pages for 1 day at the "user" level so we can stop this spam nonsense. If someone is more awake than me and feel up to the challenge, that'd be great and might even earn you some kind of trinket as a reward. Thank you. Punky McPunkersen 10:05, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

I can do some manually due to having spare time and bored. Armondikov 10:19, 3 July 2011 (UTC)

Apparently I lost the last moderator position to AD by about 2/10ths of a vote...[edit]

1 - didn't expect to do so well, 2 - STV might be the fairest system, but it's very weird. Liveware Problem 23:37, 7 July 2011 (UTC)

no one's doubting the outcome. We're just confused as to how it works. Those elected are the new mods for better or for worse--Brxbrx 01:08, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for understanding and addressing each of my points! Liveware Problem 03:55, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
The fact that people voted for me as first choice surprises me, as I marked myself as tenth IIRC. Good luck LP, theres always next election. Ty 01:59, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
I voted for you first, Ty. But more people wanted Nutty Roux and Weaseloid and shit. So it's just more of the same...--Brxbrx 02:29, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
I wasn't really keen on running, I'm going to be away/busy quite a bit the rest of the year. Senior year and all that. Ty 02:34, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
Fairness and complexity tend to correlate well when it comes to democracy. Just check out how they elected the Doges of Venice. Straight FPTP is easy, but creates a system where a "winner" may only have support of a small minority (as the potential lowest support being inversely proportional to the number of candidates). AV/IRV is basically short form X-Factor style voting with preferences, added complexity but still not perfect. Meanwhile you have multi-member STV and a load of really complicated algorithms that take into account all preferences and while fairest because it takes the most information into account, no one can get their head around it.
That said, the most mathematically fair is "random ballot", and that's plain piss-simple, although not easily applicable to multi-member elections. Armondikov 12:28, 8 July 2011 (UTC)
I still contend that the results were by first place votes only. No one reached the 11 first place votes to automatically qualify, thus any second or subsequent vote was null and void. Speakerface 00:52, 14 July 2011 (UTC)

Fuckin' pets (useless bitching by a very tired punk)[edit]

So here I was thinking I could go to bed early tonight (5 a.m early to be exact) so that I could wake up a few hours before work later. Little did I know, my soon-to-be-evicted black cat was on a power trip last night and pissed all over my bed and all the furniture in that part of my house. Not only that, but I caught her in the act when I went to my room and was greeted by her attacking me on her way out the door. So now, instead of being asleep, I'm up 2 hours later than I wanted to be cleaning the cat piss stench out of my furniture and bedding and have to get up in less than 8 hours. Moral of the story: anyone want a black tabby? Punky McPunkersen 11:48, 19 July 2011 (UTC)

Cats: Assholes of the Domesticated Animal World. Speakerface 13:23, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
Things you might want to check: 1) Is there a clean litterbox nearby? 2) Does the cat have a bladder infection? Oftentimes this type of behavior is due to not having the first, or having the second. If it's unusual behavior, you might want to look into that. It's the only way your cat can tell you they have a urinary tract infection and are in pain. I'm always surprised at how many people atttribute their cat's actions to malevolence before really considering what else might be going on - since this is not normal behavior - I know too many people who got angry at their cat for this type of thing and the cat was later found to be ill - in a few cases it was bladder infection, in another, the vet had left an instrument inside the cat when it was spayed. Be kind, check into it, your cat will thank you. Refugee 21:11, 19 July 2011 (UTC)
When one of my cats got real old it started having trouble like that. It was 12 though. Ty 02:09, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Your cat hates you, and was trying to remove your stink from the bed. Stop kicking it. --85.78.107.40 00:48, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
BoN is most likely right here. This cat's been on a power trip the last month ever since it realized it was the dominant cat. After that, it started picking fights with both of my other cats and (much to the dog's entertainment) also picked a fight with my Mastif. This was mostly a territorial thing, and my vet said it most likely won't get better any time soon. Thus, in order to bring peace to my household, I'm going to bring this cat to a local no-kill adoption agency so that it can get an owner with less pets and more patience to deal with it behavior. I don't hate this cat, but I can no longer put up with her behavior. Punky McPunkersen 12:26, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
This is a common reaction. An owner is fed up with their cat and gets rid of it. So many people do this. They don't have time or energy to work with the situation and find other solutions (separating the cat, making it's own area, spay/neuter it, etc). I have worked for the Humane Society and several cat and dog rescue operations and if you think a "no kill shelter" is the answer think again. First off, rarely, if ever, do people come in to adopt an adult, older cat. They always want a kitten, so they can raise it and have it be a "part of the family". No one wants an older cat, especially with problems. Your cat, like many others, is doomed to spend the rest of it's life behind bars, caged for years. That is, if it doesn't get sick, or develop health problems (sore joints from restricted movement is common, and respiratory problems) in which case it will be put down anyway. Some older cats do get adopted, but when we checked up on them later we found they had been resold to medical experimentation labs, or had been used as "bait" in training pit bulls to fight. A very sad state of affairs, but this happens often. I can remember only one legitimate home that was found for an adult cat when I worked there. And dozens of caged cats who had been there for years, starved for attention and affection. But, don't worry about it, your reaction, as I said, is common, and many people delude themselves that their cat will find a good home. Of course, it already had a good home. But it still beats opening a car door and dropping off an animal in another neighborhood to wander the streets be attacked by other cats and dogs, hit by cars or die of starvation and/or disease. Refugee 14:52, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
And I thought the (half) dozen of bees I have to get out of my room every night during summer time are a problem... --Ullhateme 17:04, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Meh, this situation is resolved. I was able to get my friend to take the cat, and, thus, Refugee's concerns about it not getting adopted and or being adopted for the wrong reasons, while valid, are no longer warranted. Punky McPunkersen 21:36, 20 July 2011 (UTC)
Or is it resolved? Now that I've actually had some fucking sleep, I took Refugee's advice and took the cat to the vet. She was given a clean bill of health. But, now that I'm not crabby due to lack of sleep, I've granted the cat a stay of sentence while I see if a) the behavior repeats itself and b) if I can correct it. I love all my pets (and there are many), and I've never had one that I didn't piss me off at some point (except my turtle but she's in a cage). Now that I've got my senses together, I think I'll work on the problem some more. Elsewise, I have a friend who said she'd take the cat in, and I know she'll take good care of her. Punky McPunkersen 12:20, 21 July 2011 (UTC)
That is very cool. I had thought you were a good person, you did not disappoint. :-) Refugee 16:38, 21 July 2011 (UTC)

MPR(?)[edit]

Forgive my ignorance, but I often see the acronym "MPR" used in relation to CONservapedia and have a question: what does it stand for? Every time I see it, I think "Minnesota Public Radio," but I doubt they care that much about Minnesota Public Radio, even if it is a liberal institution. Punky McPunkersen 23:10, 26 July 2011 (UTC)

Rachel from Friends? Did anybody else think she should have ended up with Zoey, and not that dork Ross?--Brxbrx 01:04, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
I'm guessing you mean Joey? Any constallation a Zoey would have been hot, though... --Ullhateme 11:45, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
lol, yeah, I meant Joey. Was there a Zoey on the show? --Brxbrx 13:19, 27 July 2011 (UTC)
Not that I know of. But Jennifer Aniston with any woman would be hot. --Ullhateme 21:54, 27 July 2011 (UTC)

I have complained about the use of this abbreviation in the past. MPR operates most of Minnesota's listener-supported radio stations and also produces a fair-sized chunk of the programming used by NPR, the national organization. Mjollnir.svgListenerXTalkerX 03:55, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
