Could we remove the categories from this page? tmtoulouse irritate 16:29, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Oh shit, good catch. They are coming over because of the transclusion of fun:pi. I'll stick something else in that slot. Is there a way to transclude and not grab the categories? human 16:37, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- About this...I am not sure I am a fan of bringing the whole article in.....I like what Wikipedia and other do where it is like the first paragraph or two and a link to the whole article. tmtoulouse irritate 16:39, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- I'm not a fan of even doing it at all, I was bored and intrigued so I sandboxed it up. Oddly, I can't seem to translude any other article besides fun:pi!
- We already have links to featured content, but AmesG had his third bright idea in a week...
- How do the other wikis do the "partial article" thing? I wonder if it's easy... human 16:43, 18 January 2008 (EST)

Dpl 'd allow first 'n' chars & then a link. SusanPurrrrrrr 16:44, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Ah, cool, then the whole thing could be done with dpl then. Any ideas, just out of curiosity, if it's possible to transclude a page and not import its categories? (any page, not one that has been prepped with noincludes). human 16:52, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Sid's good @ dpl (I thnk) - I'm a) too slow b) busy, but I should think so. SusanPurrrrrrr 17:05, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- Well, that wouldn't be a worry with dpl as you describe - the cats are at the end, so wouldn't be picked up. Transcluding, however, brings in everything. Oh well, it's no big deal, really. Unless someone tells me how to do it... human 21:03, 18 January 2008 (EST)

Well, I'll give it a go but I'm S L O W - I just think I'll be ½ way thru & someone'll come up with the solution - SusanPurrrrrrr 22:04, 18 January 2008 (EST)
- If you do want to try, copy the junk from my sandbox to a new one and replace as much of this as you need to:
! <h2 style="margin:0; background:#ddcef2; font-size:120%; font-weight:bold; border:1px solid #a3bfb1; text-align:left; color:#000; padding:0.2em 0.4em;">Random Featured Article</h2>
|-
|<div style="overflow:auto; margin-left: 0; margin-bottom: 0.5em; width: 100%; height: 250px; border:#ddcef2 solid 0px; background-color:#faf5ff; color:#000000;"> {{:United States}} </div>
- with your dpl stuff and it should work. The first part is the header, you may want to keep. The second part is the scrollbox, which would get replaced. human 09:32, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Template Randombest[edit]
H see Template:Randombest (now deleted. SusasnG) puts first 2000 pp of a random member of Category:Best of RationalWiki - had to eliminate Category:Image & Category:Category(!). Just neds transcluding into your thing. SusanPurrrrrrr 16:48, 19 January 2008 (EST)
- Cool! Thanks! I'll see if I can hammer your sweet round peg into the scarred, burred square hole I made. Btw, I cut it to 1000 characters, and I'll probably add "read more" to the link at the end, if I can. human 18:43, 19 January 2008 (EST)
I caught the header part, thanks. Yah, the pseudoscience template needs to be changed to a % rather than fixed width, I'm gonna do that. I knocked it down to 800, 500 might be fine. Just a taste of the intro should be enough. Check its talk page, it appears to be inserting a couple of unfortunate linefeeds. But otherwise, putting it in was a piece of cake. This might be very nice. Oh, and is there any way to center rather than bullet the linked title? (I know, I'm whining, you did great...) human 18:55, 19 January 2008 (EST)
RandombestA[edit]
Right, now just put template:Bestof' on any page & it can be selected by RandombestA SusanPurrrrrrr 20:12, 19 January 2008 (EST)
(btw: it doesn't leave any visible trace on the article) SusanPurrrrrrr 20:18, 19 January 2008 (EST)
- Have a look @ Template:RandombestA (now deleted) now - it's fairly self explanatory. I'm bored now - might add some more "bestof"s in a while if you think its OK. SusanPurrrrrrr 21:06, 19 January 2008 (EST)
- Close to a good idea. The important things are to 1. distinguish it from the "best of" categories (so it is seriously misnamed), and 2. make it easy for general editors to "get it". The latter being more important, IMHO (very humble). Why not call it "coverstory" which harks back to AmesG idea to even do this? Anyway, we'll hash this out eventually, as opposed to the "trigger happy kid" who wants it all NOW. human 21:15, 19 January 2008 (EST)

1) Yup - I'll move & amend to coverstory then.
2) Explanation on template not enough - I'll make a HELP page -eventually.
SusanPurrrrrrr 21:36, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Ha! There's already a "template:coverstory" I'll rename the flag "CoverFlag" & RandombestA : CoverRand. Wadyerfink? SusanPurrrrrrr 21:52, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Template "CoverArticle"[edit]
Right, The one for you to include for the front page is: {{CoverArticle}} & the one for each included page is: {{CoverFlag}}. I've altered everything I've done - over to you. Making a Help page now. SusanPurrrrrrr 23:08, 19 January 2008 (EST)
Damnit! Just thought of a MUCH better/easier/smpler/more intuitive/aargh way of flagging articles. D'you wanna hear it? SusanPurrrrrrr 00:12, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Do you mind if I move template:coverstory to template:covernominate? then I can use "coverstory" to select the articles. I've got things (improved things that is) ready to drop in. SusanPurrrrrrr 11:18, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- How about "coverstorynominate"? Or whatever. As far as template coverstory, that was AmesG's thing. Oh, and if you want/need to play and test fings, feel free to sub things into the sandbox here.
- Let's keep playing and banging on this, hopefully we will come up a fairly easy system, with intuitive template names & such. Perhaps there should end up being a "nominations" link in the transcluded page section, going to discussion and a full set of instructions? human 11:54, 20 January 2008 (EST)
See the pages I've added @ Rationalbeta. SusanPurrrrrrr 12:55, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Thanks guys, this thing looks awesome.... I wish I knew wikicode this good...-αmεσ (tinker) 13:30, 20 January 2008 (EST)
Moving 'em over - nowish. SusanPurrrrrrr 19:50, 20 January 2008 (EST)
Template coverstory[edit]
- Done, you just include {{Coverstory}} in your template & that's it. I'll document/help it & clear up the rubbish soon. SusanPurrrrrrr 20:13, 20 January 2008 (EST)
- Hey,
SuzeSusan, how about if the template we include to put articles on the front page makes a nice little box at the bottom of the article saying it's a front page article? human 09:41, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- Hey,

- Well, as it s there dosen't need to be anything on the article to show it's been honoured - perhaps there should be? Hm ... Thinking ... SusanPurrrrrrr 10:01, 21 January 2008 (EST) (not "Suze" please - unfortunate memories)
- Yes, I see that they are drawn from that bullet list of links. The main reason I thought of doing it is to serve to let people know that the editing quality on them is expected to be a bit higher than our typical droll drivel. human 10:16, 21 January 2008 (EST)

Something as simple as:
Cover story
? SusanPurrrrrrr 10:38, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- Well, I was thinking of something like "This article is randomly featured on the main page, so please maintain a high standard of
wandalismediting here." With a link to the coverstory explanations on "featured on the main page". In a nice little muted grey box, and, as I said, at the bottom of the article, unless we can figure out a way to noinclude it, then put it at the top. human 10:58, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- It works! If we put a thing at the top inside "noinclude" tags, it doesn't show up on the "main page" tranclusion! Sweet... this should be done to any "CP" article we coverstory, because that "conservapedia" template takes up a lot of space and is a bit intrusive on the front page. human 11:01, 21 January 2008 (EST)
Where's the box(The coverstory box that is)? SusanPurrrrrrr 11:29, 21 January 2008 (EST)
I can make tjhe templates carry tags wit them - how zat? SusanPurrrrrrr 11:38, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- We don't yet have the box in question. What do we call it, "cover"? "coverarticle"? I didn't even want to think about how to put the tags in the template - how do you do it? I thought putting them on the template would "noinclude" the template. Do you put them inside another tag that "kills" them on the first transclusion? There are quite a few that should have that done to them (notscience, conservapedia, pseudoscience...), since they just don't play well on the front page. human 11:50, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- Ha, thought it was easy: using &l t; instead of the "less than" (<). But it worketh not. I've put an enquiry out @ WP - let you know what eventuates. SusanPurrrrrrr 12:57, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- I wonder if we could put the "noinclude" tags inside "includeonly" tags. Break the software! human 13:10, 21 January 2008 (EST)

Specifically warned against on WP! SusanPurrrrrrr 13:45, 21 January 2008 (EST)
- Breaking the software in general, or my little "let the tags fight it out" suggestion? human 14:00, 21 January 2008 (EST)
[edit]
Template:Coverstory: I've headered it & footered it - trial & error but it seems to work. SusanPurrrrrrr 10:03, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- Header size - I can't see it on mine - twas just a guess. Should the header be linked or just a black header? Still waiting response from WP on noinclude thing. SusanPurrrrrrr 10:33, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- I like the linked header, but maybe black would be better? We'll have to think about it, or ask others. Obviously, I had to mess with your work ;) But it looks very good. By the way, the "noincludes" aren't working to kill templates on articles for some reason (check chelation therapy and herbal supplement for examples). What's up with that? Because those templates look awful when transcluded to the "main page". human 10:38, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- Strange. BTW the noincludes'll be included (hee hee) in the 800 count even if they don't work. Trouble is you can't see if they're there in the dpl'd article. (can it be linked and black?) SusanPurrrrrrr 10:51, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- Yeah, but wasting 30-40 characters for the noincludes & template name is better than the template gumming up the works on the main page. But why aren't they working any more? And, yes, the title could be both black and linked. I forget the tag order that works, but I did it with my sig, for instance. human 11:11, 23 January 2008 (EST)

possible[edit]
Well it's possible (excluding {[includes]} that is) but I'll have to learn a bit. So might take another day (or2). SusanPurrrrrrr 19:53, 23 January 2008 (EST)
- Hey, there's no deadline. As far as I see it, each day we get a little bit closer to pulling this off. OK, you do. I just provide feedback ;) I prefer this gradual approach to this sort of thing anyway. Work it out, get it right, document it, keep working it out, get it better, keep documenting... human 21:06, 23 January 2008 (EST)
Tried 3 different suggestions with dpl so far - none work! (eliminate; reset & include section 0) bastard! SusanPurrrrrrr 21:16, 23 January 2008 (EST)
Owzat?[edit]
Fink it's done now - OK? SusanPurrrrrrr 18:34, 26 January 2008 (EST)
- I messed with the help file a bit, but it really looks like we are ready to present this to the mob, yes. I suppose we should do a team presentation on the main talk page. You did most of the work, so if you want to announce what we have constructed so people can discuss it, go ahead! Oh, and I should link the template & the header to the help file first, doh! human 20:47, 27 January 2008 (EST)
- OK, I dun dem tings. Feel free to alter if you think of a better way. human 20:55, 27 January 2008 (EST)
- Mmm like it. - but - on a smaller screen the what is this might get split across two lines (it does when I simulate 600 x 480). How would it be with header centred (
spheh!) & what is this put on second line? Just a thought. SusanPurrrrrrr 21:10, 27 January 2008 (EST)- I'll use nbsp's to force it not to break. human 21:14, 27 January 2008 (EST)

Gimme 1/2 an hour or so to try and break it. SusanPurrrrrrr 21:21, 27 January 2008 (EST)
- Just as a quick question, why are "..->" and "read the entire article" separate links, even though they go to the same thing? It's not important, but it's kinda weird... ThunderkatzHo! 21:24, 27 January 2008 (EST)
OK, maybe they're not, but why does my computer not underline the whole thing when I hover the mouse over it? 68.83.4.4 21:26, 27 January 2008 (EST)Ignore that, I think they are separate. ThunderkatzHo! 21:27, 27 January 2008 (EST)
I've got a nice little announcement/explanation wrtten. Where shall I put it? SusanPurrrrrrr 21:49, 27 January 2008 (EST)
- Looks like you did fine at main page talk. As far as "howzat", I'd say "yet another six for a true captain's innings". Or in Americanese, "out of the park". human 23:59, 27 January 2008 (EST)
- You might also want to field a short-lived link to it at recentchangestext? Partly to show off and partly to get the widest feedback possible? Hopefully Bohdan will turn up and say he hates it, sealing its permanence on the RW frontispiece... human 00:02, 28 January 2008 (EST)
