Utne Reader is an American magazine and website that republishes articles from left-leaning "alternate press" publications and websites. Utne operates as a sort of Readers Digest for the left, but in a full-size format and without the meddlesome trimming that made RD what it is. The goal of Utne is to collect essays on politics and sociology that the most popular mainstream media outlets ignore, then package them in a slick magazine that is shelved next to current events magazines like Time, Newsweek, The New Republic, and The American Spectator. Unfortunately, Utne's reliance on "alternate press" publications will occasionally lead to the republication of articles that take favorable views of less-favorable topics like alternative medicine, food woo, and vaccine hysteria.

The magazine is named after its founders, Eric Utne and Nina Rothschild Utne.
