Rebuilt page...[edit]
I have tried my best - to weave 'a narrative' of those horrible couple of years which as as accurate as possible and [hopefully] readable to future persons without first-hand experience of the battles of the era [such as British 'Gen Alphas' and foreigners]. I have basically ref'd up to my arse on this one to hopefully make the case that my narrative is the right one and I feel I've covered the topics as dispassionately as possible.
I beg in advance; please don't put partisan hack-work in here. KarmaPolice (talk) 22:45, 9 July 2024 (UTC)
Contrafactual[edit]
By sheer luck or chance BoJo called the election before COVID as the lockdown would have caused problems. Anna Livia (talk) 13:34, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- He was one lucky fucker, that's for sure. Covid just came in at the first issues with that glorious 'Brexit deal' would have been spotted, then it presented a generic reason why the hell they've not done anything and then continues to present a mask for all the minuses due to putting economic barriers on ourselves. Then as we were coming out of the pandemic [into a more 'new normal'] then Ukraine happened which bought him perhaps another six months.
- I'm currently starting to pre-draft the 2024 page. I have come to the conclusion I am most likely going to have to write a 'Covid Pandemic in the UK' page first otherwise my 'Background' bit is going to be about x5 as long the 19 one [which was kinda too long for my liking, but there wasn't anything I could really cut from it]. - The lettuce has to be mentioned; also compare 2019 with 3 male and 3 female party leaders with 2024 - all male leaders; also elections (or not) to the House of Keys and the Channel Islands equivalents. (Count Binface and the 1313 Act against wearing armour in Parliament is marginal.) Anna Livia (talk) 19:33, 19 August 2024 (UTC)
- I think I might be able to get that in, but a lot will have to be cut; these pages are designed only to be a broad-brush overview of the times. KarmaPolice (talk) 14:09, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- At the time people were complaining 'too close to Christmas, when people will be going off for their breaks' - and probably 'with hindsight it was good timing' was a more general attitude than appears in the commentaries. And with the run-up to the 2024 election there was a feeling/expectation that 'it is time for a change after so many years of Tories in power', though if Corbyn had still been in charge 'things might have got slightly messy.' (One advantage of the UK system is that it is possible to have another election fairly soon after if the set-up in existence is 'too unstable', as happened in 1974. - But it had to happen then. Brexit date was 31st Jan '20, the agreement needed to be signed/ratified by this point and the current parliamentary layout meant passing said agreement was impossible. Dec 12th was perhaps the last date you could get a GE done/dusted before the sands ran out. All the signs were all the parties were effectively gearing up for a GE by May. - Bear in mind I titled the section 'contrafactual', so allowing for other factors to be rearranged/they could have passed some legislation to extend the period of discussion etc.
- So how would the 'theoretical 2020-2021 election' have played out? Anna Livia (talk) 19:47, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
