Deeper Analysis[edit]

Does Plato really explain what the levels of Knowledge are, or does he only use allegory. Because explicit definitions of those 4 layer are not mentioned here, it seems unclear to me if that is Plato's omission or the editors.--WaitingforGodot 11:44, 15 July 2008 (EDT)

OK last edit and then I really gotta go to bed. The answer to that is I'm not 100% sure. I was certain that Plato himself made all this explicit, but having been re-reading the republic for a while (and remembering what a wonderful book it is) I can't find it. This page comes almost entirely from the memory I have of studying plato at uni and perhaps I have made the mistake of equating Platonic thought with a secondary analysis of Plato. As I remember it its fascinating stuff (much better than what I'm writing here) but it maybe better off as an essay entry or something than a page on the allegory itself.--Damo2353 12:21, 15 July 2008 (EDT)

Anyone else look at this and think maybe an article on Bloom's Taxonomy is warranted, since the Allegory is kind of the beginning of it? Possible links to epistemology...etc?--Sethpeck (talk) 17:13, 17 November 2011 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Why would the prisoners believe the one who claimed to have seen an alternative reality but who cannot actually prove it in fact or in reality (as the other prisoners are still constrained)? Anna Livia (talk) 15:53, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

Misappropriation by Cranks[edit]

Something I just thought of regarding Plato's allegory. A number of uneducated cranks think they're "enlightened" and may apply this allegory to themselves out of context, claiming everyone else is equivalent to the cave's prisoners. How to tackle that argument should it pop up? TheEternalOutsider (talk) 14:41, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
