Talk:Taoism
I am a Taoist and I would humbly like to represent this page fairly and without pretense. I would kindly suggest any suggestions. Jorge 22:54, 2 April 2009 (EDT)
I Changed Things[edit]
I'm not sure anyone will really notice/care about my removal of the paragraph beginning "Despite the ravings of right-wing fundamentalist Christians that Taoism is a new age cult, Daojia Taoism is not a religion...". I did so because Taoism is a religion and a philosophy, some of it's famous texts do address "afterlife or spirits", and I think the connection with objectivism is a stretch. Note on vagueness[edit]
The first paragraph had this sentence: It is centered around the name-giving Tao (or "the Way"), an intentionally vague and all-encompassing concept that's insanely difficult to translate. At an early stage of human history, many words were polysemic (i.e. vague). Science and technology are long-term processes of generating precise use of language; we have become so accustomed to this precision that the vagueness of ancient texts seems "intentionally vague"; on the other hand, the Tao offers a particular flavor of vagueness that strongly appeals to woo-meisters. Being intrinsically vague, it's not insanely difficult to translate; rather, it gives translators lots of pseudoprofound options; thus there are many translations by people who did not know Chinese: such fun! Another sentence I rewrote: The Tao is supposed to be the true, yet elusive form of the source and fundamental order of the whole universe... How embarrassing to complain of vagueness and then use the word true, as though it had a Boolean meaning during all the centuries of Chinese history; so I also revised that sentence. Move to Daoism?[edit]
Since Dao is the romanization preferred by the vast majority of modern scholars on the topic, shouldn't Daoism be the title instead of Taoism? Plutocow (talk) 02:52, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
