In Iraq the US was attempting to hold together three factions as one nation. In Vietnam the US was trying to prevent the unification of two factions into one nation. In Iraq the US faced an "insurgency" which was really a few thousand foreign infiltrators using suicide tactics with no real support from the populace and only a tenuous supply chain to Iran or Syria.
