Why[edit]

Why is Kanye West alt-right again? TheEOE (talk) 03:05, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

Well, as long as he still likes "fish sticks". ;) And yes, this is obligatory: https://youtube.com/watch?v=0uf1g6N4sKY Chair tater (talk) 09:52, 29 April 2018 (UTC)
I personally don't feel that Kanye is bigoted, regressive, or authoritarian enough for the alt-right label to truly apply to him. Crazy? Yes. Irrational? Definitely. But a Nazi? Not likely. After he came out in support of Trump, Kanye has said in interviews that he doesn't really care that much about Trump's policies and is more concerned with his populist image and sway over the public. Asthis summary of his most recent interview explains:

Kanye feels like Donald Trump winning against the odds is something that he can relate too. [sic] He continues to state that racism isn’t a deal breaker for him supporting Trump. “If racism was a deal breaker for me, I wouldn’t live in America.” He defends his point of view by saying that he has love for Obama, but his fascination with Trump lies within his obsession with people telling someone they can’t do something, only to pull it off. When Charlamagne [the interviewer] tells Kanye that his own mother would not respect his views on Trump, ‘Ye is left speechless for a moment. A rare sight. He then says that he’s allowed to have different views than his mother, although you can tell the statement deeply affected him.

So, in short, I don't think Kanye's really a member of the alt-right. He's severely mentally unstable and horrifically misinformed and misguided, but not alt-right.NotYourAverageBoN (talk) 17:12, 5 May 2018 (UTC)

Name Change[edit]

News just got out yesterday that he legally changed his name to Ye (No middle or last name). Is a rewrite and rename in order, or should it be kept as is? armed_roomba (she/her)What am I doing wrong this time? 00:33, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

Did a rewrite and no issues found yet. Do we move and keep a redirect, or let it stay as is? I'm on the fence about this one. The legal name change is definitely a good reason to change it, but I doubt someone who isn't familiar with him would know what "Ye" is just by seeing a link. armed_roomba (she/her)What am I doing wrong this time? 18:03, 20 October 2021 (UTC)

It remains to be seen if A: Ye continues to call himself that and B: People who talk about him accept the new name or if they just ignore it and continue calling him Kanye West (or alternatively call him something like Ye West). I'd say keep Kanye for now, make note of what he currently calls himself at the top of the article, and then in a few months see how things have progressed.24.228.242.185 (talk) 16:53, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

The media is heavily resistant to calling him by his chosen name, but I'm unsure whether that really matters, since legally Ye is his name. The "what he calls himself" point is pretty good, except he hasn't talked publicly since election rallies and hasn't updated his Twitter at all. He never even announced it, the news was found through court documents. The complete silence on his part makes it hard to determine through these criteria. armed_roomba (she/her)What am I doing wrong this time? 16:58, 21 October 2021 (UTC)

Kanye West still appears to be his stage name and is what everyone is going to refer to him by. It may be a publicity stunt like Snoop Dogg changing his name to Snoop Lion. Even Wikipedia still refers to him as Kanye West. Nonstopmaximum (talk) 23:38, 21 October 2021 (UTC)
