You hate jazz!?!?!?
True, I am bullshitting, it's not a great analogy. However, it's far less bullshit than claiming that there is no difference between, say King Oliver and Anthony Braxton, or Art Tatum and John Zorn, or Ella Fitzgerald and Albert Ayler, or Chet Baker and Sun Ra, ad infinitum.
I like Nebby. Also, I am going to NY next week for my semi-annual jazz holiday. Fred Hersch, Paul Motian, Ron Carter and Steve Coleman are all on the menu. Any chance you're in the Apple, Neb? I'll buy you an overpriced beer at the Vanguard if you are, for all your hard work here.
Ugh, I hate you. :P I happen to live there, but next week is one of the few times I will not be there. Unless we just get another huge dump of snow, in which case I will be here but no one will be doing anything anyway.
Also, further clarification, I should say the analogy between jazz and classical is forced, but the general idea is that jazz has developed into a very diverse style of music. As rich and varied as classical, no, but definitely not "all the same."
"I like Nebby. Also, I am going to NY next week for my semi-annual jazz holiday." Come to the Met, we'll set you straight yet!
Edit: Unintentional, yet fortuitous, rhyme.
