A special request[edit]

We need the touch of someone with perhaps a more historical, literary, and sociological perspective to review my efforts to expand Template:AOTW Descriptions. To me, at least, you seemed an excellent choice. Just in case you are not aware these are the descriptions used at RationalWiki:Article of the Weak. tmtoulouse nettle 00:27, 2 August 2008 (EDT)

Sure, I'll be happy to take a look. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 04:55, 2 August 2008 (EDT)

Just when you thought it was safe...[edit]

I pounce on you and ressurect and ancient feud. Have at ye!

Took me ages to find a good version of that second one. I would have prefered "Twenty-Four Hours" for the first, as well. It's even gloomier.
I'm going to stop nitpicking now. ~ Gloom(is never asleep) 10:54, 2 August 2008 (EDT)

A duckroll! I haven't been duckrolled for... well, for at least nine months or so, I guess. And Joy Division is uncharacteristically listenable compared with your usual selections. This'll be hard to beat. I wonder who knows what to do? Oh! I know! --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 14:51, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
Actually, I find JD a lot less tuneful than my usual. I suppose your poor scrambled-up Danish ears cannot distinguish that, though.
I hope you like purple! ~ Gloom(is never asleep) 14:31, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
Hey, I think I rememeber that game. Or something like it. But yes, I do like purple. In fact, I like it so much that I was going to put something by Deep Purple here. But then I said to myself: "Amaranth! That's far too obvious. You can do much better than that." And surprisingly, I found that I agreed with myself. So since it appears to be a bit of a theme recently, I'm going to offer up some more game-related music instead. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:18, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
I think you meant this... Basic mistake, but I won't hold it against you. ~ Gloom(is never asleep) 20:03, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
I can assure you that I most certainly did not. Christopher Tin's masterpiece is lightyears ahead of that piece of pedestrian emotionalism with authoritarian subtexts. LIGHTYEARS, I say! However, I don't mind humouring you in your apparent love for Disney music. For a while. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 20:44, 7 August 2008 (EDT)
In that case...
I hope you like... er... baroque Canadians! <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish!NewWorldEnterprise 05:29, 21 August 2008 (EDT)

As far as I'm concerned, talking to yourself if fine as long as you don't actually disagree. Back to the drawing board, Kjeldsen :P --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 20:38, 3 August 2008 (EDT)
I'm afraid I must disagree... --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 20:41, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

Cognitive dissociation, help![edit]

OK, so here on RW we give you awards for steadfastly trying to explain the intricacies of Catholic theology to us... and yet on CP you're a Godless Liberal! [1] Man, I think if Schlafly's head gets stuck any further up his ass, it might pop back out the top and he could see again! ħumanUser talk:Human 21:57, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

Also, from Andy's irrefutable randomly-found-via-Google source: "Side Note - Viking Leif Ericson originally called North America Vinland because of the grapes they found. He is the one who discovered North America in 896 not Christopher Columbus who arrived later in 1492. Leif Ericson converted his mother to Christianity but his father remained a staunch pagan." ħumanUser talk:Human 22:04, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

More ideas: No women travelled with Columbus, either. Odds are, the first European women to arrive in the New World did not do so until the 17th century? Also, Vinland was not the only "lost settlement" - some, if not many, English settlements vanished without a clear reason too... ħumanUser talk:Human 22:22, 3 August 2008 (EDT)

Yeah, I give up. I tried arguing, reasoning, even being sympathetic to this whole "durr we must identify Christian heroes" spiel. Nothing works. But then we already knew that. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 07:28, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Leifr Eiríksson[edit]

So, I see that damned pagan Scandinavians had nothing to do with discovering America. One of the commentators was almost to make an argument about landing in "America", and i was just waiting for him to say it, so we could remind him that his hero Chris-o-boy didn't exactly land on the continent. ;-) Fight the good fight, I suppose. --Waiting for Godot 15:01, 4 August 2008 (EDT)

Yes, I could. But I quit. I have washed my hands entirely of that project. What kind of a Kierkegaard fanboy would I be if I didn't stand by such decisions? Not a very good one, that's what. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 18:35, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
You can't quit unless you've been sacked. While you still have a viable account there, you haven't really cut your ties with the place... it doesn't make any sense -- and you know as well as I do that you'll only end up back there after you've forgotten what it was like.
I suggest you ask Henry to block you. <font=""; face="Comic Sans MS">Jellyfish!NewWorldEnterprise 18:46, 30 August 2008 (EDT)
Surely, it is the fact itself of my decision to quit that actually matters, rather than any external issues such as whether they would let me in or not. Besides, I doubt Henry would block me. He can be a bit funny like that. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 18:51, 30 August 2008 (EDT)

By the way, have you noticed how nicely our signatures suit each other? It's very pretty. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 05:15, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
If you say so. My sense of aesthetics has always been a little impaired. But for some reason, I do not find my doubts entirely allayed by your reply. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 05:35, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Aw, poor you :( Well, rest assured that they are indeed very pretty. And yes, I believe aesthetics takes an h after the first t. I'm far more puzzled about the acceptable way to refer to letters in text. Do you put them in quotes? Capitalise them? What happens if they're plural?? God, it's like a minefield.
And you should know that "footwear-related vigil" still exists. You must have heard about half of it during out songwar. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 05:42, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Okay, yes, I am aware that certain bands and die-hard supporters of that genre still exist. We should preserve you and put you in a museum for posterity before you die out entirely.

A full timezone? Does this mean you're on holiday? Kidnapped by terrorists? New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 05:52, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Oh, that won't be a problem. No professional museum would use more lighting than its exhibitions could handle.

Incidentally, do you like my nu mowse? New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 19:25, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
I would, but it reminds me a bit too much of a Long-eared jerboa for my tastes. I trust this troubling similarity was not intentional. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 19:51, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
It's a mowse, silly, not a jerboa. You should have a mowse as well, like me and Linus. Yours would be green, because it's cute. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 20:04, 6 September 2008 (EDT)

--Blue mowse.png AKjeldsenCum dissensie!
It would be much more aesthetically pleasing that way. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 20:26, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Agreed, but I'm afraid AK doesn't actually want a mowse at all (unthinkable, I know!). His remark on the subject was uncharacteristically brusque :( New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 20:33, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Perhaps he's frightened of mowses? :( --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 20:36, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
I think he's just being masculine. Or maybe his lack of aesthetic sense is playing up? New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 20:38, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
You will notice how pleasing the cyan mowse is with the color of my signature. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 20:42, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
I did indeed, and I changed all your older sigs to be with the cyan mowse. I think it could stand to be a bit lighter, though. It doesn't quite fit the text at the moment. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 20:44, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Does this work better, do you think?
--Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 20:48, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Yes. But could you upload it over the old version so I don't have to change them all manually? Is big job fr a smll mowse liek me. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 21:09, 6 September 2008 (EDT)
Gentlebeings! How do you expect me to keep striking down the unbelievers with the fear of God with a mouse in my signature? This would never work. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 04:21, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
You could have something more tough and frightening, if you really want. Like a shark that's on fire. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 04:27, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
Sorry to keep being contrary, but somehow I don't find a shark on fire very frightening either. Possibly because it would have to be on land, for one thing. Maybe a lion instead. We already know that jokes are made better by adding lions, so maybe the same thing goes for signatures. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 14:09, 7 September 2008 (EDT)
It could be a shark coated in magnesium, which can burn underwater under certain circumstances. --Cyan mowse 2.png λινυσ() 17:22, 7 September 2008 (EDT)

Respect[edit]

We seem to have clashed twice recently. Nothing personal and, quite frankly, I should have more respect than to argue history with a professional. Silver Sloth 08:21, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

No problem, and I honestly can't remember the first time. (I clash with so many people. ;-) ) It's not so much the discussions themselves that annoys me, but rather that people never seem to question their acquired assumptions about the period at all. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 08:28, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
What's this about reading books by historians? I read Jacques LeGoff (?) as a child, didn't like it and dismissed medieval times alltogether. Instead many years after I was hooked by a book written... by a newspaper reporter :-P Not to say about Umberto Eco's fictional book, Il Nome della Rosa. P.S. I am one of those annoying people above. Editor at CPLiar at RP! 08:59, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
My assumptions were based on The Sleepwalkers by Arthur Koestler which is a marvelous read but more and more I'm finding that he got it wrong. For example he described Kopernicus's De Revolutionibus as The Book Nobody Read whereas recently Owen Gingerich has completely debunked that. Silver Sloth 09:08, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Ed, it's unfortunately true that many historians couldn't write compelling prose if their tenure depended on it (and it doesn't, which may be a significant part of the problem). However, what I'm complaining about is the general assumption that just because a person is qualified in a certain field, he or she is also qualified to write the history of that field. This means that you've had officers writing military history, doctors writing medical history, economists writing economic history, and scientists writing the history of science. Sometimes such works can be good, but much more often, they're pretty bad, often because the author doesn't know how to place the work in the historical context or how to use and interpret the sources. Eco gets it, though. But then, he's a semiotician, which is practically the same as a historian. ;-) --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 09:45, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Incidentally Bugler seems to have been listening to your persuasive arguments about the achievements of the early middle ages. weaseLOIdWeaselly.jpg~ 10:54, 11 September 2008 (EDT)
Interesting point about history in one's field. For sure if I were ever to write a history book, it would be on Renaissance or Napoleonic Warfare or on the Cossacks before and after the Russian Revolution, not about Carnot or Watt or the history of engineering unless my Renaissance book focuses on Leonardo. Editor at CPLiar at RP! 11:23, 11 September 2008 (EDT)

So be it![edit]

Admit that L is amazing. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 07:36, 12 September 2008 (EDT)

Thank you, I will. In yet other news, I believe it is your move in the Big Epixxorz Song Contest. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 07:29, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I wish you wouldn't rush me. Anyway, here goes nothing... New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 07:35, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
That's a pretty blatant case of comment forgery you've got going there. I'm impressed. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 07:43, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I like to think that that's how the conversation would have gone if you'd been entirely open about your adoration of L Nods.gif New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 07:46, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Indeed, counterfactual history can be a tricky field, especially if your assumtions are flawed. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 07:57, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Yes, it was a mistake to think you could be open about this deeply cherished infatuation of yours :(
Actually, I was originally going to choose another Arcade Fire video(Laika!), but I thought I would probably be penalised for that kind of thing. Leave it to the Nightwish fans, I always say :nods: New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 08:09, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
That's a good thing to say. I think. I guess it depends on exactly what it is that should be left to the Nightwish fans. Anyway, I haven't watched your new video yet, since I'm at work and they have little appreciation for such things here. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 08:23, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Actually, I'm going to change my submission now, so it's lucky for me that you haven't seen it yet. This is what happens when you rush me! :P
You still working at the L Adoration Centre? Do they still have Jellyfish Fridays? New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 08:58, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I'm pleased to take this opportunity to establish in no uncertain terms that I have never worked at any such "L Adoration Centre", nor would I if such an establishment actually existed. Incidentally, Monday will be my last day at my actual job. That feels a little strange.
Your song submission is most perplexing. I had just gotten confortable with the idea that you were completely devoid of any taste in music whatsoever, and then you put forward a song which actually has some merit. Although I do like Space Oddity better (Not a submission, just for illustration). --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 11:35, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
How much would I have to pay you to work at the L Adoration Centre, then? How about 500 Danemarks?
Please haggle.
Space Oddity rambles too much. And even if it were perfectly focused, it would still be vastly inferior to Life On Mars :P New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 12:02, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Depends. How much is a Danemark worth in an internationally recognized currency? And is that per hour? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 12:29, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
You probably call it the krone, or something like that. And it would be a one-off payment for accepting the position. After that you would receive standard pay. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 12:55, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Oh, I see - sort of a headhunt bonus. In that case, you're probably looking at at least one month's salary in advance, which is about 30000 DKK (ca. £3175) plus a 10% markup to reflect my incredible awesomeness and level of skill. I'm also available on a freelance basis - in that case, prices obviously vary according to the nature of the work. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 13:20, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Now look here Adrian -- can I call you Adrian? -- this isn't headhunting per se, as there's nothing preventing you from continuing to work for the Danish Museum of AKjeldsen (or wherever it is, I forget) at the same time that you're working for us. I think 500 DKK is more than reasonable, under the circumstances. I'll throw in a few pokemon cards, alright? Don't say I never do anything for you. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 13:30, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I think I would like to know a little more about the nature of this position before we continue these negotiations. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 13:47, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Your duties would be primarily to adore L, and secondarily to express or demonstrate adoration towards him and/or his person. Happily, only the second part is mandatory ^_^ New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 14:05, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
I see. I assume there's some sort of quota I'd have to fulfill? And what is the "standard pay" for this? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 14:08, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
As far as quotas go, you must achieve the level of "smitten" or higher. You will be paid in elfin gold. New3.pngPink(Astronomy Domine) 14:17, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
Um...
I'll think about it, but the projects have simply been heaping up lately, so I can't promise anything. You know how it is.
Don't call me. I'll call you. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 14:24, 12 September 2008 (EDT)
