OR WHERE YOU REMIND ME THAT I'M A GLORIOUS HUMAN BEING
"There is a lot/number of things" vs. "There are"[edit]
A quick google only turns up people saying that it's "there are", not "there is". Where do you get that it's "there is"? Nullahnung (talk) 10:42, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
- Like I said, singular v.s. plural -- ("there is a number" versus "there are a number"). Mind you that the technically wrong form is so ubiquitous that I'll not raise any contest if you insist you want it to be "are". Lola Lazerface (talk) 04:45, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- There is a difference between "there is a lot of competition" and "there are a lot of sharks". Similarly, you would say "there is a handful of water" and "there are a handful of donuts" It appears the deciding word for plural/singular is not 'lot' or 'number' or 'handful', but rather what comes after. I know it goes against a good sense of grammatical structure, but I've long since accepted that English is one of the weirdest languages out there. Nullahnung (talk) 10:36, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- Actually, I think this is enlightening: [1]
- Let me ask you this. Would you ever say "A few of us is hungry"? Do you consider that to be a different case to "Hungry people. There is a few of us"? If so, why?
- My personal conclusion is that English is weird and there is no solution to this dilemma. Nullahnung (talk) 10:51, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- English is indeed weird, and that's why I like to stick with the SINGULAR = IS thing even when it's counter-intuitive. And so should you... for language! Lola Lazerface (talk) 09:47, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

If you want to discuss anything with RW's users...[edit]
...the appropriate venue is RationalWiki:Saloon bar, not Talk:Main Page. Also, you seem to have removed content from your talk page without moving it to an archive page. I suggest you fix that - people here don't look kindly on removing talk page posts.--ZooGuard (talk) 19:30, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

Mmmmbop. - I fucked the girl in Hanson (talk) 00:38, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Err. I would congratulate you, but I don't know whether this girl is a transvestite. In any case, welcome!--Colonel Sanders (talk) 00:43, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- And that would stop you from congratulating him? - LucidFox (talk) 01:51, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- It was a strange, strange joke set upon a premise that was not even wrong. I didn't even know how to address it. Blue (is useful) 01:55, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
I'll go against my principles and explain the joke for the sake of friendliness: Hanson was a 90's band consisting of 3 teenage boys, one of which was easily mistaken for a girl. Thank you for the warm welcome. I've been reading this wiki at somewhat regular intervals for about a year or so now and while I have negligible wiki experience, I felt like I could perhaps contribute as I noticed a few articles were missing fun facts. Actually registered some time ago, but before I could even add info on John Hagelin's fraudulent studies of TM's supposed efficacy to the Transcendental Meditation article I was blocked for a week. So here I am again, tired and rambling. - I fucked the girl in Hanson (talk) 00:50, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks....? We don't geddit here. But you seem trusworthy enough.--Colonel Sanders (talk) 00:53, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
Why thank you. Only time will tell exactly how trusworthy I am, or even active, for that matter. Now I sleep. Let's talk tomorrow and be friends. - I fucked the girl in Hanson (talk) 00:56, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm pretty sure more than one of them was mistaken for a girl. They all looked like girls. BTW, I'm not an expert on the subject but I've taken a few anatomy classes and I am pretty sure that the sphincter between the buttocks is not the same as the "vagina" (the female reproductive organ), and that you may well have "fucked" a man. Check for a wrinkly sac and a fleshy tube. Should be found in the midst of pubic hairs.--User:Brxbrx/sig 00:57, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
- This "vagina" you speak of is a liberal cesspit that caused the election of Barack HUSSEIN Obama, the creation of welfare, and disease. It is a result of the fall of man and the iniquity of the world (Genesis 3). It is the reason there is malnourishment, poverty, and why there is a national debt. In other words: pure evil. Anything you hear otherwise is deceit. Please check your facts before speaking again.--Assfly 01:20, 23 August 2011 (UTC)
