- The law governing computer related fraud and vandalism is 18 USC § 1030, which is what Andy thinks is going to send the guy to jail [1]. Unfortunately, if Andrew Schlafly Esquire were to actually read 1030, he would see that, among other violations that don't apply in this case, the vandal must have done at least $5000 in damages, and have accessed a "protected" computer (see part (5)(B)(i)). It's arguable whether or not a public wiki on a public webserver is a "protected" computer, because it is "used in interstate or foreign commerce or communication." Either way, I don't know what Andy charges per hour, but it seems like a stretch to say that 10 minutes of reversion is worth more than $5000. Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, but I can read the law

Make a page in Wikipedia that exists in one's user space. Lets call it User:yournamehere/elsewhere - elsewhere can be anything other than a banned word on Conservapedia. Explain the mission of RationalWiki and provide a link. Encourage others to copy this into their own user space too. Possibly make it a user space template for easier inclusion. At this point, if Wikipedia itself becomes part of the spam filter (making it increasingly annoying for Andy to add his biases). Alternatively, he could attempt to systematically add each user to the spam filter. If this is done, a random account with a common word would make Andy's life increasingly difficult (look for the hidden message here) . Its just a matter of having something else pointing there.
Alternatively, there are many services out there that work on shortening the name of a url. The one that I am most familiar with and is most likely already to have been blocked is http://tinyurl.com/ - a quick look should provide many others that will do a similar job.
Ultimately, Andy is fighting against the software - it is not designed to limit communication but provide for it. Spam blocking is designed to block spammers - not people trying to send information to each other. --Shagie 21:47, 13 July 2007 (CDT)

I think this whole FBI thing is hilarious. What Andy and pals don't seem to realize is that what wikiusers call "vandalism" would not fall under the crime of vandalism (and even if it did, the FBI doesn;t go after vandals). It's just a term. They start a wiki, invite people to add to it, and then call the FBI when they don't like what's added. They don't seem to realize that the FBI is not going to enforce Conservapedia's rules. Now, if someone was adding threats, or crashing their servers they might have a case (might). What do they really expect to happen? If I know these guys, if they were getting anywhere they'd be bragging up a storm. Front page news. The fact that they seem almost embarrassed makes me wonder if the whole thing backfired, and the FBI is balling them out for wasting their time. Does anyone know what the specific acts of "vandalism" were in this case? DickTurpis 15:28, 1 August 2007 (CDT)

The Latest[edit]
Expand[edit]
I think we need to get serious about expanding this whole thing. Intimidation tactics, etc. Or not. User:PalMD
- Does anyone want to waste a little more of the FBI's time and e-mail them. Getting a statement from the FBI that they wont work against wiki vandalism should shut them up. - Icewedge 13:24, 30 July 2007 (CDT)
- Ixnay on the andalismway. Maybe something about threats made, etc.--PalMD-Goatspeed! 13:33, 30 July 2007 (CDT)
- A better idea (IMHO) would be to write to the FBI as if you were one of the sysops at Convervapedia (pick one that isn't easily linked to a name, like cp:User:Conservative or something). Find a user on CP who has recently been blocked for vandalizing and report that user to the FBI (pick a random--but real--IP address, since it's not like the FBI is really going to check it out). That way we could see almost exactly the response that Andy got. Then slap that up on RW as "FBI response to Conservapedia vandalism" or something. Sandman 13:35, 30 July 2007 (CDT)

- FBI smart, not dumb...don't fuck with them...it pisses them off, and they're very busy people, hence, nuisance reports like Andy's are a drag.User:PalMD 14:14, 30 July 2007 (CDT)
- No, it's not a smart idea to drag The Man into our admittedly silly obsession. Not only is it likely to get you in trouble too, but one of the principal points is that Andy's wasting their time. Let's not add to that. However, I am DESPERATELY keen to know what's going on.... Doggedpersistance 15:47, 1 August 2007 (CDT)
The paranoia is ramping up...all mention of the secret FBI files is immediately deleted followed by the ban of the offensive schmuck who brings it up. Interestingly, in one user's castle, the topic is hanging so far.--PalMD-Goatspeed! 12:08, 1 August 2007 (CDT)

News Release
For Release: April 16, 2007 U.S. Department of Justice
United States Attorney Northern District of Ohio
Gregory A. White United States Attorney
Ann C. Rowland Assistant U.S. Attorney
Gregory A. White, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, announced today that a criminal information was filed against Dr. Ramini Sri Pilla, age 41, of 2741 Hampshire Road, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, charging her with making false statements in a matter within the jurisdiction of the federal government in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 1001.
According to the Information, Dr. Pilla, an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at Case Reserve University (“CWRU”) perpetrated a hoax against the University by falsely reporting to the FBI that she had been the victim of threatening hate mail and that she suspected three of her colleagues of delivering the letters to her. She told the FBI that between December 19, 2006 and February 28, 2007, she received four such letters, and that her colleagues were motivated to send them to her because of her ethnic origin and her gender. She told the FBI she believed the senders of the hate mail were angry at her for (1) making a complaint to a CWRU hotline alleging discrimination and (2) filing a compliant with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against CWRU alleging discrimination. In addition, she filed a complaint in Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court on or about January 25, 2007 seeking a temporary restraining order and injunctive relief and alleging that CWRU had not “taken every reasonable action necessary to protect her life, health, and safety” in response to the threatening letters she claimed to have received.
As a result of Dr. Pilla’s false accusations, CWRU and the FBI conducted an investigation. The cost of the investigation, along with CWRU’s administrative costs in responding to the false reports, totaled approximately $86,000. If convicted, the Defendant’s sentence will be determined by the Court under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines which depend upon a number of factors unique to each case, including the Defendant’s prior criminal record, if any, her role in the offense and the characteristics of the violation. In all cases the sentence will not exceed the statutory maximum of five years and in most cases it will be less than the maximum.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Ann C. Rowland following investigation by the FBI and the CWRU Police Department.
An information is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. A defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

- But this doctor's false reports possibly had a material benefit - compensation money, or promotion, so there's a point to the FBI looking into it. Schlafly's "vandalism" is no such thing.
