Debate:Sinophobia in liberal areas
Ahoy, matey! Beware, for there be a great sea of Concern Troll Bullshit ahead! |
Many liberals appear to blame the surge in Sinophobic hate crimes since the COVID-19 pandemic on Republicans/conservatives, claiming that the usage of the term "Chinese Virus" perpetuates racism. However, from the articles I've read, it seems to be the case that the vast majority of these hate crimes occur in liberal areas. Surely one would expect that these highly woke, progressive cities would be full of tolerant liberals who would intervene in these situations and make sure no one is being discriminated against, right? From the disturbing videos I've seen, it hasn't appeared that way. Unclescrooge (talk) 21:09, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
The left has been using this despicable hate crime to attack Trump and the Republicans. Does the perpetrator look like some far-right nutjob or more like an Antifa punk? Unclescrooge (talk) 21:12, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Fallacious implicit assumptions. Firstly, Liberals are not left-wing. They can lean left, but unless they become social democrats at the very least, they cannot be left wing. Thusly they're centrists. Secondly, assuming that all liberals are progressives. This is not necessarily the case. Both of these are the result of you lumping vast swathes of groups together as if they were a singular monolith, when in fact they are anything but. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:16, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Nice deflection you got there. Have trouble staying on topic? Unclescrooge (talk) 21:22, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- So rather than listen you're just going to double down? ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:28, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- You just broke every irony meter in the world with that pot calling the kettle black. Congratulations comrade. Unclescrooge (talk) 21:29, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

- Are you stupid? The Anti-fascists would have elbowed that thug. They oppose Sinophobia as much as everyone else does. MarioSuperstar77 (talk) 21:23, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Perhaps it'd do you good to ask that question directly to a mirror. Look at that picture with the recent attack in Oakland. Assuming you paid attention to the insurrection last summer, don't you think that malicious punk looks like a SJW/far-left goon? Unclescrooge (talk) 21:28, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- @MarioSuperstar77 Don't bother, this person is pretty obviously concern trolling. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:29, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- @MarioSuperstar77 I've seen a video last year of anti-Asian hate crimes when the COVID-19 pandemic began. Those attacks were in liberal places like Brooklyn, NY. From what I noticed, the people witnessing them didn't intervene to help those being bullied. Since the city is very left-wing, that means there had to have been many left-wingers (aka anti-Trumpers) who weren't woke enough to stand up against Sinophobia. What do you think that tells you? Unclescrooge (talk) 21:37, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- "Very left-wing". I was unaware that one of the most capitalist cities on earth was "very left-wing". ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:39, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) That you are laughably incapable of presenting an intelligent argument, Scrooge.-Flandres (talk) 21:40, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Another GC deflection, and it seems that your understanding of U.S. politics is even worse than me lazy nephew Donald's understanding of hard work. "Democrats hold most public offices, and the borough is very liberal. As of November 2017, 89.1% of registered voters in Brooklyn were Democrats." [1] Unclescrooge (talk) 21:43, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- That still leaves more than enough potential conservatives to commit a hate crime. You only need a handful, and up to eleven percent of the population of Brooklyn is a bit more than a handful...-Flandres (talk) 21:45, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Perhaps, yet how come the vast majority of these anti-Asian hate crimes are disproportionately in very liberal areas? How come there aren't enough woke, racially tolerant leftists to stand up for those being bullied in these heavily Democrat cities? Unclescrooge (talk) 21:47, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Well, most liberal areas have a far higher population of non-whites than most conservative areas. Republicans are strongest in rural white America for a reason you know. There are just less Asian Americans to attack in more conservative areas.-Flandres (talk) 21:50, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- How exactly am I "deflecting"? You know I fucking study this shit in my spare time right? Also, lol, the Dems aren't left-wing, not even close. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 21:51, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

I think Unclescrooge has tacitly admitted defeat and stopped posting in this debate, as the entire basis for their argument was destroyed with three sentences from Flandres. Is it necessary to start a new argument about the argument itself? Christopher (talk) 22:04, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- @Christopher Well, supposing they're right, wouldn't you want to know if you were me? And supposing that they're wrong, wouldn't you want to clear up any misunderstandings if you were me? ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 22:08, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- I think we can suppose they’re wrong. I don’t think it’s a misunderstanding, just a case of someone throwing around insults in a debate without any regard for the actual meaning of the word, “deflection” is a common choice. Also that ping didn’t go through, it turns out if you have a templated signature you can never ping people. I hope you don’t mind me saying you tend to get a bit too invested in these arguments. - It's still broken? Bummer. And yeah, I do. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 22:17, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- It’s not broken. It’s the same on Wikipedia or any other wiki, just how it’s coded. I think making it work would put more strain on the server (has to check whether the template has a link to a user page each time), not that template sigs don’t do that already. So, all I got in this argument was "city has high population density, city has more hate crimes, big city left, big city hypocritical". Is that what can be accurately summed up here? I got nothing of intellectual rigor reading this. It's extremely gross to insinuate hypocrisy on my end (a inhabitant of big liberal cities) to be unable to stop hate crimes. --It's-a me, LeftyGreenMario! 23:17, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Basically that's about it. ☭Comrade GC☭Ministry of Praise 23:58, 14 February 2021 (UTC)
- Just another concern troll. Is it any surprise that reports on Chinese-American hate crimes and racism are going to be reported in areas where more Chinese Americans are, as depicted by this map? Areas which have had a large Chinatown for *decades* (like the San Francisco area and NYC) might have more opportunities for racist idiots being racist towards the Chinese! (sarc) I'm shocked! (/sarc) Also, people forget that California (home of Saint Reagan and Tricky Dick, right?) was once a fair bit more conservative than the "woke liberal" memes of the Fox News crowd has it, and there certainly still are pockets of racist idiots even in so-called "woke" places like San Francisco (if the OP sincerely believes his bullshit, the chance that he actually visited a "highly woke, progressive city" is IMHO pretty low). By the way, OP, The Cut article you referenced blamed "the Trump administration", not "Republicans/conservatives", for stoking xenophobia. If Trump style white grievance whining is what "Republican 'conservatism'" is in America now (that's my opinion as well), here's a warning anecdote: it is my opinion that the racism of Pete Wilson in 1990s California was a significant factor in the decline of the California Republican party into a nothingburger force in 2020. Such wouldn't be quite as stark in the US as a whole (considering the rural bias in national American politics), but given demographic trends, a relative wilderness for the GOP is IMHO possible at some point if they can't shake off the Trump demon. PanGalacticGargleBlaster (talk) 01:06, 15 February 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, "liberal" cities aren't somehow immune to racist hate mongering. In the middle of a SoCal suburb, a brother of my friend (who has Mexican heritage and so looks like a Mexican) got harassed at a bus stop by a racist, with the racist idiot telling him (who is an American born here and has lived here his entire life as I have since him and I are the same age) to "go back to where you came from" and then was denied service by the bus. Meanwhile my friend got profiled at a Toys R Us to reveal his backpack and leave it at a store counter while my sister and I (who pass as white rather than Asian) were carrying duffel bags and did not have to do this. If that kind of shit can happen in a city with a white minority(!!!), it can happen anywhere and basic probability tells me it'll happen more often where there's more people. --It's-a me, LeftyGreenMario! 01:13, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

- I'm beginning to think the OP is just stupid. Has he ever heard of Orange County? Third most populous county in California, sixth most populous in the nation, and very conservative. The whole "California liberal" shtick always helps to tell you who hasn't been to California. And it's more than just Orange County (which contains Anaheim, Santa Ana, and Irvine): tons of the central and western counties are strongly conservative and fairly populous. Even further, places like San Diego and LA have tons of conservatives, but they don't compose a majority. To assume that there are only leftists in California, and that therefore any time a hate crime is committed it's their fault, is so asinine I can barely begin to put this nonsense into words.
