The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is an alphabet first developed in 1888 by the International Phonetic AssociationWikipedia and than updated multiple times, the last update being at 2005. The goal of the IPA is to unambiguously transcribe any sound in any of the world languages. In contrast to the English alphabet, where a letter can represent multiple sounds, the IPA has one letter for each sound, which can be very practical for linguistic use.

The IPA is the most common phonetic transcription system ever created! It is commonly used in linguistics, education, or simply when the pronunciation of the word is ambiguous.[citation NOT needed][note 1]

A rapid guide[edit]

When we look at the IPA chart, we can see that it is typically divided into 4 main categories: vowels, consonants, tone and other symbols.

Vowels[edit]

A vowel is a syllabic phonemeWikipedia produced without any stricture in the vocal tract. More simply, a vowel can be (but not necessarily) a whole syllable without any other consonant. This definition can also be applied to some kinds of consonants called syllabic consonants. However, they are discussed in more details in the section "other symbols", and this section only focus on true vowels.

(True) vowels can typically be distinguished by three main characteristics:

  • Height
  • Backness
  • Roundness

Consonants[edit]

Tones[edit]

Other symbols[edit]

Notes[edit]

  1. The word ghoti is pronounced /fɪʃ/, thanks to the oddities of the English Alphabet.Wikipedia
