MediaWiki talk:Blockedtext
Wait a minute, if i try to edit my own user talk page with this thing the link "and your prevous block record" goes to the nonexistent block log of my user talk page. Can anyone fix this? --Signed by Elassint the Great Hi! 17:35, 4 December 2007 (EST)
- That what you mean? --Sid 17:40, 4 December 2007 (EST)
- Yep. It works now, thanks. --Signed by Elassint the Great Hi!
- Come to think of it, wouldn't that bring up the block log of whatever page/user you tried to edit at that time? Not sure when this message pops up, but right now, it refers to the page, not the user. --Sid 17:45, 4 December 2007 (EST)
- Just tried it, and yes, it really tries to get the block log of whatever article/user/etc page you tried to edit instead of your own (of course, when you try to edit your talk page, it fits - but that's it). --Sid 17:56, 4 December 2007 (EST)
- I like the non-broken version of it. --Ζωροάστρης 00:23, 5 December 2007 (EST)

- Why is there no "$4"? :( Kettle Kin (Version 2.0) 21:44, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- The number 4 is evil, of course. Alternatively, it might be because the line associated with $4 has been superceded, but is kept for compatibility reasons between software updates. Take your pick. Kirkburn 22:13, 19 October 2008 (EDT)
- I noticed on my CP logs that "16:03, 7 June 2008 Aschlafly (Talk | contribs | block) has renamed User:Kektklik to "$2" (Renamed the user "Kektklik" (which had edits) to "NathanG")". How do I use the "money magic"?

Can we remove the last line?[edit]
“”Your current IP address is #####, and the block ID is ######. Please include either or both of these in any queries.

Nobody gives a damn about the block ID. It's much easier to look up a block by username/IP. & Asking an editor whose username has been blocked to quote their IP address when querying or disputing that block doesn't seem right privacy-wise. WėąṣėḷőįďMethinks it is a Weasel 17:10, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- Since nobody has objected or otherwise commented, I've gone ahead & removed it. WėąṣėḷőįďMethinks it is a Weasel 19:46, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- Pop quiz: User A complains about a block. You search the block list, and all you find are IP blocks and a few autoblocks (which don't show you the IP for privacy reasons, only an ID). How do you know which one to unblock? -- Nx / talk 19:58, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
- OK, but it should be rephrased. If autoblocks conceal IPs for privacy reasons, then asking blocked users to disclose their IP in all enquiries doesn't make much sense when it's only actually needed in a small minority of cases. I suggest taking out the final sentence, so that blocked users can see their IP & block ID in case a sysop who is looking into the block asks them to confirm these, but aren't automatically told to disclose them unnecessarily. The SeriousWiki Cabal does not approve[edit]
Now that we're using blocks against spambots and stuff, we should probably make this more useful in case an innocent editor gets this message. -- Nx / talk 18:54, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Proposed change for this and MediaWiki:Autoblockedtext[edit]
Text:
You and/or your IP address have been blocked.
- Intended blockee: $7
- Intended IP: $3
- Block-giver: $1
- Block reason: "$2"
- Block start: $8
- Block end: $6
- Block ID: #$5
Please include all above details in any queries you make.
You may contact $1 or another administrator to discuss the block. (You can use the "email this user" function only if a valid email address is registered in Special:Preferences and if you have not been blocked from using it.) Alternately, (if not blocked from doing so) you may edit your user talk page. Once unblocked, if you feel that the blocking sysop $1 wrongly used their power, feel free to take it to the chicken coop.

- I'm generally ok with everything but the "take them to the coop part" goes against the rules on coop usage, which is its the last resort, not first resort, to accusation of abuse. --"Paravant" Talk & Contribs 22:56, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- Mm, would removing ", feel free to take it to the" and changing "wrongly used" to "truly abused" be sufficient? Fuzzy "Cat" Potato, Jr. (talk/stalk) 22:57, 27 October 2015 (UTC)
- If you don't know the coop exists you probably shouldn't be taking anyone there. Carpetsmoker (talk)
Mention the coop[edit]
Again:

Or no? 32℉uzzy; 0℃atPotato (talk/stalk) 04:06, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
- nah. It already mentions "You may contact $1 or another administrator to discuss the block. You can also use the "email this user" function if a valid email address is registered in Special:Preferences and if you have not been blocked from using it. Alternately you may edit your user talk page if you have not blocked from using it.", which is enough. Carpetsmoker (talk) 04:12, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
