MediaWiki talk:Recentchangestext/Archive1
More[edit]
It was pointed out that we should have more links here, since many people use "RC" as their RW home page. In fact, this is probably a better place for noticeboard type items - a place to get almost everyone's attention.
Suggested additions:
- Project Whitewash link
- Wanted pages link with instructions
- dead end pages link
- categories link
Our prayers go out to the victims of the most recent tragedy reported on teh 5 o'clock news
I would suggest using a nicely formatted box thing. We can cram a lot of great links into one that isn't too big. humanbe in 13:35, 14 September 2007 (MDT)
- Yeah, I've added the things I think should be there...but I'm not the best at formatting/design, so go to work, Format_Peeps! DogP 13:47, 14 September 2007 (MDT)
categories[edit]
But Human - the Category list doesn't work? It's a broken page link. DogP 14:28, 14 September 2007 (MDT)
- I made it work after checking it. Right now it's set up as a full url; hopefully when the wiki settles down it can be shorter. Check it out now. Those lists of 50 are just a waste of time. humanbe in 14:37, 14 September 2007 (MDT)
- Category list is 404 for me.--Bob's your uncle 12:59, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
- Try it now. tmtoulouse persecute 13:04, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
- Category list is 404 for me.--Bob's your uncle 12:59, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
I'm edit warring over how to list categories here - I much prefer the use of Specialpages:Categories, as it shows Categories that are currently redlinked. Opinions? DogP 14:15, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
- I thoroughly object to this exact link. It only shows fifty. Red cats are another whole issue, what I want is a one-click list of all cats so I can look for ones to use on articles. Can you at least append the &limit=500 to it? It still shows red cats, but it shows all cats with one click. Heck, I'll try it... By the way, you also put a typo in it. humanbe in 15:47, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
"By the way, you also put a typo in it". What do yo want me to do, jump up and down? Human, you're very snarky these days, you need to chug a beer or something. Where's the old, great Human, instead of the one who makes me feel like I'm being spoken to by TK? Come on Dude, we're all trying to help here. DogP 22:34, 16 September 2007 (EDT)
- Hey, sorry, didn't mean to come across that way. But, some edits instantly propagate across the entire site (everybody's watchlist, recent changes, in this case), so we have to be more careful about what we put there. As I should have done with that first cat link I added, which was simply broken. A typo in an article is just something to fix, but we should really carefully test and proofread our changes to files like this one. Including me. humanbe in 01:59, 17 September 2007 (EDT)

"slogan"[edit]
Since the line of text below the box that used to promote the boycott has turned into a sort of randomly updated slogan, I suggest that when there isn't something of burning importance to communicate, we just include the "slogan" template we use on the main page. templates[edit]
We should take all these cool seasoningly sayings and make them templates to keep the page easier to look at. It will be our little box of holiday decorations, to be dusted off and reused each year... I might take a whack at it. Then only the template (or sub page transclusion) will have to be commented out. human 01:08, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Good idea. I cleaned up the commenting-out junk, and gave all the "sayings" a name before I saw this. I also put the big grey box into its own template so that part would be simpler. I'll make the holiday template now. Г☭длессЛиберал 02:39, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Put useful links template into welcome template too? 193.113.235.168 02:49, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- That's probably a good idea, though it would probably make the welcome temp. huge. I'll play around with that right now. Г☭длессЛиберал 02:55, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Look here. Г☭длессЛиберал 03:35, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Try this - make the 'decorations' template a simple inclusion, with noinclude/includeonly tags (or html commenting out) to edit what shows up? Rather than copying back and forth? human 03:10, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- How do I make an inclusion? Г☭длессЛиберал 03:12, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Just put {{mediawikipooplumpschangediapers decorations}} in the main file. But first, work on the template itself, so only one part of it gets "included". Since the template isn't used anywhere yet, you can experiment with previews on the recentchangestext thing (or in a sandbox) without breaking anything til you've got it right. Then add different instructions on the decorations template so people can work with it easily. human 03:18, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Any time you use {{somefilename}}, first the software looks in 'template:' for something with that name. If it doesn't find one there, it looks in main. Here follows a horrible example (look at the source). human 03:21, 26 December 2007 (EST)

<- Okay. I think I've figured out how to do it. I just finished messing with the welcome template in my sandbox, so I'll try that now. Г☭длессЛиберал 03:35, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- Doesn't seem to be working. I can get it to work for templates and userpages, but not for an article in the mainspace. For example, {{goat}} doesn't insert the goat article. Г☭длессЛиберал 03:44, 26 December 2007 (EST)
- I made {{holydaze}} and put it on recentchangestext, using noinclude to comment out what we aren't using. Check it out. template:holydaze. human 14:16, 26 December 2007 (EST)

- Aw. Did you mean the content at Template:Holydaze#The_Night_of_the_Blunt_Knives? If so, I'm glad I lol'd you. I have always admired your contributions to the project. I sort of maintain the HolyDaze thing as a one-man project these dayz, not that I pretend to "own" it. I may be the only person who remembers where it is and how to work it, is all. Anyway, to repeat, I'm glad I made you lol. :) :) :) :) It made me smile, thanks. ħψℳ₦ 01:48, 22 May 2008 (EDT)
