Hmm...[edit]

Hmm... frankly, I don't see the point of this piece. To me, it reads like "look at that bullshit Ellen White wrote 130 years ago HAHAHAHAHAHAAA... of course, we all know that Betty Dobson has it right." Which is no more enlightening than its counterpart on CP (yes, I'm talking about their inexistent article).

There would be lots of interesting questions on the topic, for example:

  • Are there any authoritative and conclusive scientific studies concerning masturbation and its effects?
  • What do the (major) religions say about it, and more interestingly: why? E.g. if they condemn it, is it "just because", or is it for a reason?

I understand that RW does not strive for NPOV like WP, but without a certain degree of objectivity, this won't get beyond "religion X says that masturbation is wrong. But we know that it is fun, so X is bullshit." Which is hardly a rational argument, and certainly not a good basis for constructive debate. --18.233.0.36 12:56, 15 August 2007 (CDT)

In Indonesia the penalty for masturbation is decapitation.

H2G2 "Quote"[edit]

Like, I totally made that up but if someone finds a cite for it, then it's right. Both the quote and what the guide says about masturbation.CЯacke® 10:33, 16 August 2007 (CDT)

Bunging the quote into Google brings up "Starving Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have" and "I had sex with my brother but I don't feel guilty". Quoting it just brings up RW. So I'm not sure where it comes from, it certainly sounds familiar but I might be getting it confused with the Woody Allen "it's sex with someone you truly love" quote. It's the sort of thing the guide should say, but as it's an invention I propose this text.
Rationalwiki has had access to an unpublished version of the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy which has this to say about masturbation: "The most fun any one person can have whilst being totally alone".
Unless there are objections I shall insert this text within the next 24 hours. (Or unless anybody else does something else first.)--BobNot Jim 16:54, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Epicondylitis[edit]

I rolled back B.O.N's edit - I can find no confirmation of this, in fact most sites state otherwise. Bob Soles (talk) 15:04, 13 December 2009 (UTC)

Another BoN Edit Rolled Back[edit]

The link is quite definite on the subject. Jack Hughes (talk) 11:41, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

However, it does appear to be one of those "strangest laws" articles, which are often plagued by myths, regardless of how respectable the source. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071209123128AAtr5jR http://www2.hu-berlin.de/sexology/IES/indonesia-part1.html http://msgboard.snopes.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=16;t=001109;p=1 Scarlet A.pngnarchist 11:44, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

r/christianity discusses CS Lewis' views on masturbation and masturbation itself[edit]

https://www.reddit.com/r/Christianity/comments/2sz2wh/cs_lewis_shares_his_theology_regarding/ Reddit can be fun sometimes.--ZooGuard (talk) 15:21, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Judaism has traditionally always been very anti-wasting-of-sperm, and Christianity is supposedly the continuation of that religion, so there's that to consider. (Note that there'd be nothing wrong with female masturbation from that perspective.) When you get down to it, it's really quite simple though: masturbation is gross. End of discussion. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 15:46, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Gross is in the eye of the beholder. Sure, I'm not suggesting it should be a spectator sport, but I wouldn't go so far as gross. Doxys Midnight Runner (talk) 16:23, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I find it difficult to see how touching slimed up genitals wouldn't be considered gross, though you're free to hold the view that it isn't, of course. I'm not saying that you should let something being gross stop you from doing it, if you feel inclined to do such things. I do find it rather troubling to ponder the likelihood of hands that social norms require me to shake having been recently involved in acts that I consider gross, though. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 16:38, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
So, I guess you don't wipe your ass either? ScepticWombat (talk) 16:45, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I do! Very carefully. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 16:47, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that mouths harbour more bacteria than the average schlong or shuttered palace. It's big to own up to your own hang-ups, though. Queexchthonic murmurings 16:48, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, considering the amounts of bacteria involved in wiping, why is it you're so grossed out by the idea that someone may have masturbated? After all, I doubt that most people masturbate as often as they take a dump. The issue is not the grossness of either act, but whether proper hand hygiene is employed afterwards. ScepticWombat (talk) 16:53, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, I'm not a germophobic. Then I'd need to be scared of almost anything. Really, germs are all around us, and 'good' bacteria are not structurally different from 'bad' bacteria. No, it's just the subjective experience of "grossness" that bothers me. Regarding the mouth-example, it's not like I wouldn't consider putting my hand in someone's mouth kinda gross as well. Though saliva seems less bothersome than... certain other bodily juices. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 16:55, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
So you're not up for blow jobs then? And if you were then you wouldn't swallow. Doxys Midnight Runner (talk) 17:02, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Well, a dick is something different from a hand. As the originator of several 'gross things' and also through internalised cultural stances towards the organ itself, it already has some grossness associated with it, which might make the relative grossness of the mouth's saliva less relevant. I will admit that the whole ordeal seems extremely gross to me, however. Why anyone would consent to being on the 'swallowing' end is beyond me. 141.134.75.236 (talk) 17:11, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
