i plan to be a Professor of European and/or mideast history

(please note that I write this under the assumption that you are in the US, if not, please disregard). Forget it. History programs are producing record numbers of Ph.Ds as they are simultaneously scaling way back on hiring. The humanities are dying, and are not likely to get better anytime soon. I know far too many people with Doctorates ftom top-ranked universities who have been on the market for 2, 3, even 4 years, getting postdoc after postdoc or some sort of non-tenure-track lectureship on a short-term contract. I'm glad you love history, but investing the time effort and money in a history Ph.D just isn't worth it, unless you're a fucking STAR, and even then.... Have you considered a career that will give you all the respect of a professor of history but a little more in terms of job security, like crack dealer, porn producer, or used car salesman? Seriously, get a trade or something. But if you're determined to ruin your life, get a certificate in museum studies alongside the Ph.D, or do some sort of joint-PhD that might set you up for other options. There is no point in us warring over this, so I will respond here. Regardless of whether or not you think Rob's defense is convincing he should be allowed to make it. It is disingenuous to accuse someone of a transgression then censor their retorts. If he is truly digging himself a bigger hole thenthe community will vote against him in the coop. Some people think attack is the best form of defense, but in any case whether it was a good defense is irrelevant. Try to understand where I am coming from - it doesn't matter if what he said was an effective defense according to me/you/anyone else. As long as we can understand what he is saying then we can safely conclude that he is making a defense. If he is doing that poorly, which is your contention, and of course I agree, then he will be voted against. Why not just let him say his piece and then the vote can go ahead? Kittens

I feel i should explain this: I'm a YEC, partially because i was raised that way; partially because i dont see the alternative in science giving enough for the wonder of the universe, to me there has to be a creator simply because things are so beautiful, so awe-inspiring. At the same time im not ignorant of most science things and they make a lot of sense, they should given it's science, although my understanding of certain topics is a little limited due to my own dis-interest in them.
