Creepiness[edit]
Don't feel bad, man (I know, you're female, but "woman" doesn't sound right). That girl was totally in the wrong for doing something like that. Trust me, as somebody who has had to put up with that kind of shit for years (just read Knight's talk page for an example from only a few months ago), I can tell you that it is no use dwelling on such things- the kind of people who will do and say such things (this also includes all kinds of mean behaviours) are not really worth worrying about. You're not a creep, and you don't deserve to get called such things. You are a wonderful person. Oh, and as a side note, I didn't know I reverted that edit. I was looking at my watch list on my phone, and my must have accidentally rolled it back. Sorry! MESSIAH OF DOOM Deserved doom shall be unto you 11:42, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks for the kind words. I have been trying not to dwell on this, though as you can tell, it still gets to me sometimes. :( Wehpudicabok [話] [変] [留] 11:45, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- By the way, you don't mind if I casually call you "man", "dude", "brother", et cetera, do you? It's not because I see you as male, it's just because I'm used to using that kind of language when trying to relate to people. But, yeah, if that bothers you, just let me know. MESSIAH OF DOOM Be judged by your suicidal desire 12:01, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- "Man" and "dude" are practically interjections at this point; I barely even notice them, much less take offense. But I would prefer not to be called "brother", yes. I appreciate that you're taking the time to ask me. I think a lot of the trouble that cisgender people have with trans people is a lack of communication, because most (though obviously not all, yourself excepted) cis people aren't really interested in what trans people have to say, and trans people are scared to talk about themselves. So anytime I see anyone taking the time to learn, I count that as a win! :) Wehpudicabok [話] [変] [留] 12:15, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- There's an interesting point here. I try to be as accepting as possible with all and sundry which means that, in the first instance, I want to treat all people the same. I wouldn't ask a cisgender person how they would like to be addressed so, as soon as I ask a trans person, I'm highlighting the difference.
- So, is it better to guess and then be corrected - just as a woman addressed as Miss might say "it's Mrs, actually" or is it better to ask? (and excuse me from barging into this conversation but I'd really like to know.) Placeholder (talk) 12:36, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- In my experience, asking someone what pronoun they prefer has been taken as a thoughtful move, but it's such an individual thing that I wouldn't blame the next person that happens with for getting shirty about it. But we're grown-ups and should be able to move forward from such a faux pas. Also, this thread reminds me of one of my favourite gender elements of the English language. "Guy" is masculine in the singular ("Who was that guy?") and gender-neutral in the plural ("What are you guys up to tonight?"). That's so cool. TeenageWasteland (talk) 14:26, 4 March 2014 (UTC)
- I personally prefer being asked, yes. I don't mind "highlighting the difference." Though I don't speak for all trans people. Wehpudicabok [話] [変] [留] 21:13, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

Recent Edits[edit]
Hi there. While I understand that RationalWiki is POV, I have always considered it to be POV towards the rationality and logical inquiry, and against crackpot ideas. The views presented on the pages I edited are, in general, completely against these ideas. They present a radical social response to valid criticisms and shun and demonise those against them. While some views are perfectly open to such attacks, such as pseudo-science and religious ideals, it's nothing but petty to have a bio, on a Physicist that is well respected in his field and has a large following on YouTube for his anti-creationism and science videos, with nothing but personal attacks. I hope to reach a compromise, but as it stands I've never even thought about editting a page until I came across what could only be described as a character assassination. 208.87.233.180 (talk) 10:38, 18 March 2014 (UTC)
- I assume you're referring to Thunderf00t. Actually the page is pretty thorough about complimenting him on his good anti-creationist work, before discussing his views on feminism; this can hardly be described as "nothing but personal attacks." Additionally even when we do get to criticizing him, we don't demonize him, but rather rebut his ideas (see the side-by-side toward the bottom for an example of what I mean). Wehpudicabok [話] [変] [留] 01:04, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, got an account. Lets look at this "discussing his views on feminism" section shall we? "Rather than move on gracefully, Mason has continued to make ill-informed comments on feminism within the sceptic community, to air his grudges, and to display the same immature attitude to criticism, churning out of a series of bitter and increasingly unhinged videos attacking feminists within the atheist community, typically full of strawman stereotypes and anally literal misinterpretations of their comments." This completely unreferenced comment just comes across as bitter. It serves very little in the way of actually explaining what Thunderf00t has said and serves only to say "Thunderf00t is wrong about feminism and feminists because we say so". How about a detailed deconstruction of points he actually made, rather than claims about what was said? There is also the table, which doesn't just give a ridiculous answer in a "because that's the way it is" fashion, but also presents multiple strawmen, "Men are statistically physically stronger than women, thus it is only natural to have this trope." ignoring that TF went on to say that people need to relate to these games and making that go against that natural order would not serve the developers. The response then plays on this gap that wasn't presented by the page. There is also this claim "This is the equivalent of saying "most gamers are white, so we shouldn't address racism."" Actually it's not. It's equivalent to saying, most gamers are white so we should make most main characters white so people can relate to them and buy more games. Funnily enough that's exactly what we see. How about this section "While a game being shallow to the point of characters having no depth is fine, (gameplay often takes priority), the nature of the trope creates an imbalance in active roles where women tend to be more passive" So gameplay only takes priority during a male trope? This needs fixing. I'm not out to hurt feelings or step on toes, I'm out to fixes a hateful and uninformed article to present reasonable arguments along with TFs defensible position without being called a "fanboy" or an "MRA Advocate". Is that so much to ask? Hobby (talk) 05:43, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- You know, I could probably say the same thing about TF, in terms of 'give a ridiculous answer in a "because that's the way it is" fashion, but also presents multiple strawmen"'.
- Let's look at your retorts, shall we.
- 1S.)"ignoring that TF went on to say that people need to relate to these games and making that go against that natural order would not serve the developers"
- 1R.)This is actually specifically answered by the second point in the table which deals with "the industry should cater primarily for men because primarily men are playing".
- Now, I know you don't agree with that answer either, so let me try to convince you by pointing you to a longer, more understanding answer, here in my essay:
- Just read the second point in the table, which deals with the same thing. Tell me what you think.
- Now let's look at the second thing you disagree with.
- 2S.)"So gameplay only takes priority during a male trope?"
- 2R.)That's not what it is saying. It is saying that gameplay often takes priority in games in general. In general. Therefore shallow characters are fine in general. But once you have a significant imbalance of active/passive roles in the gaming market, it's time to examine that and maybe add some more variety. That's what it is saying. Nullahnung (talk) 12:21, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- So you agree that the first point should be removed as it's a strawman and only the second point is actually relavent to the argument. They are in fact the same issue but one is a strawman and the other is addressing the full argument made.
- You're correct, I do disagree with the answer on the second one as well, mainly because of the following: "Besides, you do want to expand your market past this narrowly-defined target demographic as well, no?". That's not how it works. You cannot influence a market by creating something new. A market needs to exist for an industry to expand into it. If you think there is a genuine market for female game characters with more character development then site me a source or an example. If it does in fact exist then don't you think games developers would be capitalising on this as we speak? If not, then it's only a matter of time, as games conform to their audience.
- I agree that gameplay should take priority. As TF explains, a simple and quick story that requires zero speach and is simple to understand for all involved is perfect for a classic beat-em-up game with zero character development and little to no story. This is the sort of game that both Anita and TF were addressing.
- Anyway, I'm sorry to Wehpudicabok for filling up your page so I won't say another word until I get the all clear. All in all this is more of a "talking past each other" problem between feminists, gamers, MRAs and rational people in general that won't be resolved any time soon.Hobby (talk) 13:23, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- I believe that game developers ARE starting to capitalise on it, and I also think that male gamers wish to be able to play deeper female characters as well, because gamers like variety. Here's a few examples of games that have come out and include deeper female characters: the newer Tomb Raider, Alice in her 3D platformers is an interesting character, I heard The Last of Us takes a pretty balanced approach in terms of gender, and that's just the bigger games off the top of my head, there's a lot indie games out there too that cater for male as well as female audiences. About the having of doubts[edit]
Since I don't want to flood someone else's inbox or something, I'll continue this here:
"I guess you're right... It's just frustrating because I was arguing with people who thought privilege was a commie plot, and was wondering the whole time "where are all the lefties who supposedly populate the RW hive-mind?" It was just me and Armondikov trying to defend something that wasn't even controversial, but Smerdis kept making it seem like it was. And then Knight, paragon of social justice advocacy and a nice editor I hadn't seen in a while, shows up and out of nowhere tells me to fuck off, because I diverged from SJ orthodoxy on one minor point. And I'm like "Where were you? I needed you! And why are you yelling at me now? What did I do to you?" And then I get into the self-doubts again, and wonder why I'm still on this site at all, when all it does is make me argue with people and piss me off. You yourself said you don't use it as a resource. Are we honestly doing the world any good here? - Wehpudicabok"
Well, different reasons why nobody came to your aid. First, Smerdis is known to be pretty set in his belief system and some people don't want to deal with that. Second, there may be a dry spell of activity from many of the more talk-inclined people right now. I think I've noticed that, at least. Knight probably didn't know about your previous engagement with Smerdis, so was probably unaware of what effect some harsh words said in a bad mood might have on you. My advice is to forgive and forget. There may be more sunlight over the next hill of life, none of us are perfect.
I don't use RW as a resource because I constantly befriend people who have a negative opinion of feminism due to either some nastiness they've come across on the web or just not being knowledgeable in the area, and I don't want to upset them further with snark, which may make it more difficult for me to change their opinions. There may be some merit in putting this RW material out there to stimulate discussion and such, and eventually RW may become a really good resource for various things, especially pseudo-science, but it's not for me and the kinds of people I'm trying to discuss with. It's just my individual thing. Still, I find this place interesting and will continue to make minor contributions as idleness allows. Nullahnung (talk) 01:54, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah... I'm sure she didn't know. It still frustrated me though. I think I might have to take a break from RW for a little while. You're welcome to contribute to my privilege rewrite if you like. Wehpudicabok [話] [変] [留] 02:44, 19 March 2014 (UTC)
- To be fair, I actually think that RationalWiki is a really good website at "converting" anti-feminists, especially with the better, less nasty articles. Hell, the feminism and men's rights movement pages alone have already, in whole and part, changed the minds of three of my previously raving MRA IRL friends. I know it's nun of mah business, but I don't think you should go away- Knight said something upsetting, and I understand how it feels to have an obviously very intelligent and respectable individual say something like that to you, and I understand the self-doubt that comes with it, but you need to understand that these things happen. We (by which I mean you/me and any random individual we respect) have arguments, the arguments get heated, and then we find out we were actually agreeing the whole time, and we become friends again. I mean, I was considering leaving myself right after my first edits turned into me being called, basically, a rape threat, but I'm glad I didn't. You know what, I'm dronk, and what I'm saying probably doesn't make sense, and makes lp seem like a douche, but basically, in saying dont take it personally. - Oh yeah, I forgot my username makes no sense ;)
- It's my (weird/bad) attempt at transcribing a stock sound effect from old video games. The game I most associate with it is the original Wild Arms, a JRPG from when I was a kid. There's this magic wand and when you use it, it makes a funky sound... well, actually five funky sounds in quick succession, that sounded to me like "weh-puh-dih-kuh-bok". It's been in other games though. I picked it as a username mostly because it was convenient knowing that that username was essentially completely unique (if you see it on any website ever, you can say with certainty that it's me).
