Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918–1970) was the second president of Egypt from 1956 to 1970 (and Syria from 1958 to 1961Wikipedia), generally considered the man who modernized Egypt. Despite his socialist economic policies, he persecuted atheist Marxists.
