Jeannette Rankin (June 11, 1880–May 18, 1973) was an American politician, feminist, progressive, and pacifist. She is famous for being the first women elected to Congress in 1916[note 1] and for voting both against the US's entry into World War I[note 2] and World War II after coincidentally being re-elected in 1940. She was the only Congressperson to do so.
She also campaigned during the Progressive Era to guarantee suffrage for women across the country.
