Essay talk:Misconceptions of liberalism
Move to something along the lines of common misconceptions about liberals? - Icewedge 01:35, 6 December 2007 (EST)
Yup. That would be better. Ryan T. / gggg?
- Move away. I don't mind, just let me finish a couple of things up first. EVDebs 02:21, 6 December 2007 (EST)
I didn't check, but this reminds me strongly of the bullshit article on CP. Anybody who is not boycotting care to check? And who did the dumping? Some single-use account? Especially if it is a CP article, maybe our essay side-by-side template may be useful for the commentary since it's more eye-pleasing debunking? --Sid 07:21, 6 December 2007 (EST)
Income redistribution[edit]
Technically, any sort of welfare system counts as income redistribution, which you'll find all liberals (and when it comes to Social Security, most conservatives!) are in favor of. Researcher 13:42, 6 December 2007 (EST)
Historic liberalism[edit]
Why is it that everyone forgets the existence of the liberal Cold War hawks, like the Kennedy's or LBJ? Researcher 13:46, 6 December 2007 (EST)
- Probably for the same reason that right wing conservatives tend to "forget" about the KKK, and other such groups. Not all libruhls are rational. Majintahu (talk) 07:17, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Gun Control[edit]
Wow, that passage on gun control reeks of poorly informed, sensationalist rhetoric. You're welcome to try and prove my edit wrong, but I have loads of real statistics to back up my stance that legal guns have no measurable effect on violent crime. Gun control isn't suddenly going to make firearms disappear.
- To be honest, all countries with strong gun control systems have far less violent crime than the US. With that in mind, however, I think our lack of gun control and our violent crime spring from a single source, rather than one causing the other. (They both come from the extremely violent culture.) As a liberal who supports local officials being able to determine their own rules (for the msot part) rather than sweeping bans, I'm willing to go along with the edit. Researcher 22:57, 6 December 2007 (EST)
- To be honest, there are also lots of countries with lax/no gun laws that have far less violent crime than the US (Finland, Switzerland, Uzbekistan, Argentina and Canada are examples.) There are also countries with outright abolition of all firearms that have far more crime (Russia, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and the UK are examples.) It's not legal guns that cause violent crime, it's usually poverty, insanity or the drug trade. Unfortunately, politicians on both sides would rather pass feel good legislation that looks good in headlines instead of trying to fix the real problems.
- Actually, Switzerland's violent crime rate IS the highest in Western/Central Europe. Maybe not as high as us in the US, but it's really high. Researcher 23:14, 6 December 2007 (EST)
- France and Italy's are higher from what I've seen. Also, Germany's is almost the same. The fact is, there are always some other issues that are effecting this, not just access to guns. Switzerland is still a haven for money laundering and because of that it attracts organized crime.
- UK's crime rate is higher than ours (US)? I guess I didn't know that.
- Anyhow, I'm one of those libs that wants to keep his Remington 1100 and Glock 17. --Ζωροάστρης 23:55, 6 December 2007 (EST)
- As long as no one tries to take my Toledo steel (or my fencing blade, or my saber, or . . . ), I'm good. Researcher 23:57, 6 December 2007 (EST)

- I love that my friends know I'm a pretty liberal person. Especially when they come to my house, and there is disassembled AR-15 on the desk in my office. Always makes them scratch their heads. I just love stereotypes. Majintahu (talk) 07:20, 2 February 2011 (UTC)
Cartoon[edit]
Is there a Conservative brain version? Daecon 04:20, 6 July 2008 (EDT)
- There surely must be, try google images? (I will) It also might just be a murky grey paste... ħuman 04:42, 6 July 2008 (EDT)

Okay the first one was just dumb. Reall, the "Condescension of other cultures" is small? Giant "Reason Lobe" (We know what's wrong with that)
It was probably made by the same guy who did the Liberal Brain.
In the begining, God created... me. And He said I was awesome. 17:43, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Move[edit]
I reckon this could move to "Misconceptions of liberalism" and maybe get a more thorough rewrite. d hominem 14:42, 10 October 2010 (UTC)
- It should have less "we". Lily Inspirate me. 09:05, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- It should have a whole lot less of "something", I just don't know what. I think it needs to start with a "good" source for the misconceptions (not some crap from CP), and then perhaps become a SBS article refuting and commenting. ħuman 09:10, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- Yeah, this is a pointless disaster as it stands, a fossil from the oldest days. Perhaps moving it to the CP namespace would be the healthiest immediate triage. ħuman 09:14, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- It's worth having outside the CP-space, but as you said, it needs references outside CP for people saying this sort of thing. I imagine WND would be a good place to start. d hominem 13:04, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think it should be moved out the mainspace ASAP, essay-space would be the best home for it. --Onion

Erm.[edit]
I'm very dissapointed with the "It's not that we don't deny gender differences" bit when that's ridiculous since gender in itself is just a construct. I'm changing it, but totally feel free to disagree with me.— Unsigned, by: 66.137.83.105 / talk / contribs
