2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.
We are 100% user-supported! Help and donate $5, $10, $20 or whatever you can today with PayPal Logo.png!

Popping into your mind

Mind is one of two components of Cartesian dualism, the other being body. Mind is where the soul is supposed to reside and is the non-materialistic, eternal, undetectable ghost in the machine that controls the mindless body. Rene Descartes formulated the concept and even went so far as to label the pineal gland as the point where mind and body intersect.

Dualism as a scientific concept suffers because it is ultimately unfalsifiable. Some proponents follow a God of the gaps style of argument where the non-materialist reality is the cause for whatever materialism can not, at that moment, explain.
