Ecclesiastes 1:1[edit]The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem. |
Ecclesiastes 1:1 Notes[edit]If you like gloomy poetry then oh boy does the Bible have a book for you. It should also be noted that this is not a claim of authorship: while the speaker claims to be Solomon here, the book was written about 600 years after Solomon's time, and Ecclesiastes is usually held to be a "mythical autobiography," a Middle Eastern tradition (and not a "forgery" as the Skeptic's Annotated Bible rather bizarrely claims). The anonymous real author is usually referred to as "Kohelet" or "Qōheleṯ" often translated as "Gatherer" (but literally 'Congregation') and usually translated as "The Teacher" or "The Preacher." The title of the book is a Latin transliteration of the Greek transliteration (ekklesiastes, Ἐκκλησιαστής), meaning 'ecclesiastical'. The original Hebrew version is called קֹהֶלֶת (qōheleṯ). |
Ecclesiastes 1:2[edit]Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity. |
Ecclesiastes 1:2 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 1:3[edit]What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? |
Ecclesiastes 1:3 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 1:4[edit]One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. |
Ecclesiastes 1:4 Notes[edit]This is cited as contradicting Mark 13:31 and other statements that the Earth will pass away, but this is not really the intent of the passage: the word translated here as "forever" is closer to "a time beyond human reckoning," and is contrasted with the shortness of human life. This is part of an overall message by the author that human life is nasty, brutish and short. |
Ecclesiastes 1:5[edit]The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. |
Ecclesiastes 1:5 Notes[edit]This is one of the passages that has been cited in support of geocentrism. |
Ecclesiastes 1:6[edit]The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. |
Ecclesiastes 1:6 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 1:7[edit]All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. |
Ecclesiastes 1:7 Notes[edit]Technically a geographer would tell you that not all rivers run into the sea: some run into endorheic lakes where they evaporate or disappear into the ground. However some of these lakes are conventionally known as seas, such as the Caspian Sea and Dead Sea. |
Ecclesiastes 1:8[edit]All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing. |
Ecclesiastes 1:8 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 1:9[edit]The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. |
Ecclesiastes 1:9 Notes[edit]This verse is commonly cited by people on the internet as an excuse for being uncreative. |
Ecclesiastes 1:10[edit]Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. |

Ecclesiastes 2:10 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 2:11[edit]Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun. |
Ecclesiastes 2:11 Notes[edit] |

Ecclesiastes 2:13 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 2:14[edit]The wise man's eyes are in his head; but the fool walketh in darkness: and I myself perceived also that one event happeneth to them all. |
Ecclesiastes 2:14 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 2:15[edit]Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so it happeneth even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then I said in my heart, that this also is vanity. |
Ecclesiastes 2:15 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 2:16[edit]For there is no remembrance of the wise more than of the fool for ever; seeing that which now is in the days to come shall all be forgotten. And how dieth the wise man? as the fool. |

Ecclesiastes 2:18 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 2:19[edit]And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity. |

Ecclesiastes 3:18[edit]I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts. |
Ecclesiastes 3:18 Notes[edit]While in context this is clearly not saying that human are exactly as beasts (the point is we all die the same), it can be useful for annoying fundamentalists who are fond of Genesis 1:28, since they probably haven't read this far. |
Ecclesiastes 3:19[edit]For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. |

Ecclesiastes 7:27[edit]Behold, this have I found, saith the preacher, counting one by one, to find out the account: |
Ecclesiastes 7:27 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 7:28[edit]Which yet my soul seeketh, but I find not: one man among a thousand have I found; but a woman among all those have I not found. |
Ecclesiastes 7:28 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 7:29[edit]Lo, this only have I found, that God hath made man upright; but they have sought out many inventions. |
Ecclesiastes 7:29 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:1[edit]Who is as the wise man? and who knoweth the interpretation of a thing? a man's wisdom maketh his face to shine, and the boldness of his face shall be changed. |
Ecclesiastes 8:1 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:2[edit]I counsel thee to keep the king's commandment, and that in regard of the oath of God. |
Ecclesiastes 8:2 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:3[edit]Be not hasty to go out of his sight: stand not in an evil thing; for he doeth whatsoever pleaseth him. |
Ecclesiastes 8:3 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:4[edit]Where the word of a king is, there is power: and who may say unto him, What doest thou? |
Ecclesiastes 8:4 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:5[edit]Whoso keepeth the commandment shall feel no evil thing: and a wise man's heart discerneth both time and judgment. |
Ecclesiastes 8:5 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:6[edit]Because to every purpose there is time and judgment, therefore the misery of man is great upon him. |
Ecclesiastes 8:6 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:7[edit]For he knoweth not that which shall be: for who can tell him when it shall be? |
Ecclesiastes 8:7 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:8[edit]There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power in the day of death: and there is no discharge in that war; neither shall wickedness deliver those that are given to it. |
Ecclesiastes 8:8 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:9[edit]All this have I seen, and applied my heart unto every work that is done under the sun: there is a time wherein one man ruleth over another to his own hurt. |
Ecclesiastes 8:9 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:10[edit]And so I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of the holy, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done: this is also vanity. |
Ecclesiastes 8:10 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:11[edit]Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil. |
Ecclesiastes 8:11 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:12[edit]Though a sinner do evil an hundred times, and his days be prolonged, yet surely I know that it shall be well with them that fear God, which fear before him: |
Ecclesiastes 8:12 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:13[edit]But it shall not be well with the wicked, neither shall he prolong his days, which are as a shadow; because he feareth not before God. |
Ecclesiastes 8:13 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:14[edit]There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity. |
Ecclesiastes 8:14 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:15[edit]Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun. |
Ecclesiastes 8:15 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:16[edit]When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth: (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes:) |
Ecclesiastes 8:16 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 8:17[edit]Then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it. |
Ecclesiastes 8:17 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:1[edit]For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them. |
Ecclesiastes 9:1 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:2[edit]All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath. |
Ecclesiastes 9:2 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:3[edit]This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead. |
Ecclesiastes 9:3 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:4[edit]For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion. |
Ecclesiastes 9:4 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:5[edit]For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten. |
Ecclesiastes 9:5 Notes[edit]While this can be read as stating that there is no afterlife, it is more likely to be addressing Aristotle's ideas that the dead knew something of what went on in the living world and could to a degree be influenced by it. |
Ecclesiastes 9:6[edit]Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. |
Ecclesiastes 9:6 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:7[edit]Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God now accepteth thy works. |
Ecclesiastes 9:7 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:8[edit]Let thy garments be always white; and let thy head lack no ointment. |
Ecclesiastes 9:8 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:9[edit]Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun. |
Ecclesiastes 9:9 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:10[edit]Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might; for there is no work, nor device, nor knowledge, nor wisdom, in the grave, whither thou goest. |
Ecclesiastes 9:10 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:11[edit]I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all. |
Ecclesiastes 9:11 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:12[edit]For man also knoweth not his time: as the fishes that are taken in an evil net, and as the birds that are caught in the snare; so are the sons of men snared in an evil time, when it falleth suddenly upon them. |
Ecclesiastes 9:12 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:13[edit]This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me: |
Ecclesiastes 9:13 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:14[edit]There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it: |
Ecclesiastes 9:14 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:15[edit]Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man. |
Ecclesiastes 9:15 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:16[edit]Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard. |
Ecclesiastes 9:16 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:17[edit]The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools. |
Ecclesiastes 9:17 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 9:18[edit]Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. |
Ecclesiastes 9:18 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:1[edit]Dead flies cause the ointment of the apothecary to send forth a stinking savour: so doth a little folly him that is in reputation for wisdom and honour. |
Ecclesiastes 10:1 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:2[edit]A wise man's heart is at his right hand; but a fool's heart at his left. |
Ecclesiastes 10:2 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:3[edit]Yea also, when he that is a fool walketh by the way, his wisdom faileth him, and he saith to every one that he is a fool. |
Ecclesiastes 10:3 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:4[edit]If the spirit of the ruler rise up against thee, leave not thy place; for yielding pacifieth great offences. |
Ecclesiastes 10:4 Notes[edit] |

Ecclesiastes 10:9 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:10[edit]If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct. |
Ecclesiastes 10:10 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:11[edit]Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better. |
Ecclesiastes 10:11 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:12[edit]The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. |
Ecclesiastes 10:12 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:13[edit]The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness. |
Ecclesiastes 10:13 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:14[edit]A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him? |
Ecclesiastes 10:14 Notes[edit] |

Ecclesiastes 10:19 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 10:20[edit]Curse not the king, no not in thy thought; and curse not the rich in thy bedchamber: for a bird of the air shall carry the voice, and that which hath wings shall tell the matter. |
Ecclesiastes 10:20 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:1[edit]Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days. |
Ecclesiastes 11:1 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:2[edit]Give a portion to seven, and also to eight; for thou knowest not what evil shall be upon the earth. |
Ecclesiastes 11:2 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:3[edit]If the clouds be full of rain, they empty themselves upon the earth: and if the tree fall toward the south, or toward the north, in the place where the tree falleth, there it shall be. |
Ecclesiastes 11:3 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:4[edit]He that observeth the wind shall not sow; and he that regardeth the clouds shall not reap. |
Ecclesiastes 11:4 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:5[edit]As thou knowest not what is the way of the spirit, nor how the bones do grow in the womb of her that is with child: even so thou knowest not the works of God who maketh all. |
Ecclesiastes 11:5 Notes[edit] |
Ecclesiastes 11:6[edit]In the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand: for thou knowest not whether shall prosper, either this or that, or whether they both shall be alike good. |

Ecclesiastes 11:9[edit]Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment. |
