Talk:Moral panic/Archive1
Cleanup[edit]
This article could use some cleanup - there's a lot of repetition of some "points". IE, drunk driving and child molestation are written about in both the examples and not examples section, and the part in the examples section repeats a chunk of the lead. And what is an "outlaw" motorcycle club? ħuman 18:28, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
- "Outlaw" motorcycle clubs - i.e. the Hells Angels, Pagans, Mongols...these. Secret Squirrel (talk) 00:24, 4 August 2010 (UTC)
Crush videos[edit]
As it stands, the article is pretty dismissive of the concept, saying that Crush videos likely don't even exist... But a quick google search shows they really do. Wikipedia even has an article about the subject.... We should probably adjust the language in the article to reflect this. SirChuckBThis country needs more Rutabegas 07:25, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Rule 34 guarantees it exists. Although I think since the advent of more powerful image manipulation, edited versions of such things are probably more common and certain a safe way of having people outlet that sort of fetish. ADK...I'll edit your neurotoxin! 15:19, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Crush videos are real. I'm sure you'll find a few porn sites specializing in it.--User:Brxbrx/sig 16:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- I've removed the footnote to that on the principle that it was masquerading as a reference but actually claimed no referenced material. In fact, that cite was one big fact tag. ADK...I'll acidify your whip! 16:18, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Speaking of cites, does anyone care if we find examples of these "moral panics", or is our saying it's out there, enough? I know i've seen oprah whine about how we are sexualizing our kids at such an early age, but i'd be harder pressed to google it.En attendant Godot 16:21, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- The thing is that some things are always going to be difficult to cite. Some people go batshit crazy over definitions (urban legends being one of the biggies) to make it impossible to say "look, here's an example of people talking about it therefore this exists". Cite what you can, people should be intelligent enough to work it out from there. ADK...I'll bang your tomato! 16:25, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

Drink Driving[edit]
Drink Driving is mentioned twice as a Moral Panic. I'm not sure this qualifies. OK, so groups like MADD have made quite a song and dance about it but (a) I am unaware of any over the top reactions and (b) it really is a serious issue which has led directly to a significant number of deaths. Unless anyone objects I'm going to remove these references. Silver Sloth (talk) 15:30, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- Please do. Cars are big, heavy, hard, and fast. Alcohol impairs judgement and slows reflexes. Cars and alcohols are a very very bad combination, and everyday we hear reports of drunk drivers killing themselves or others because they decided to operate heavy machinery in their inebriated state.--User:Brxbrx/sig 16:06, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
In the same vain, I'm not sure "sexual slavery" should be on here. Report after report is done of asian and eastern european women coming into the US or other countries to be "maids" only to find themselves in brothels. I'm not sure that's panic as much as it is fact. Or, I've just bought into the Nightline/BBC panics when they do their documentaries.--En attendant Godot 16:10, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- I'm with you on this one. The figures from UNESCO are horrifying. Silver Sloth (talk) 16:13, 25 August 2011 (UTC)
- my redlink - Redlink- before I remove the redline of "very special episode" do we have this concept, just under a different title? If not, it's so very very RW.En attendant Godot 16:14, 25 August 2011 (UTC) (edit conflict)
- There is the "white sex slave" thing, that supposedly the media hides for the sake of political correctness (I've never bothered to look at the claims of either side, though. Maybe there is an epidemic of white slavery?). I think one of us wrote an article here about a panic with Pakistani men preying on young British women. I'm not sure these quite count as moral panics, though. Just stuff overblown by wingnuts.--User:Brxbrx/sig 17:42, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

- It's complicted. Sexual slavery exists however it is somewhat overstated. The reality is that most of the women who find themselves in brothels expected to be there (if you are going to work as a prostitute it's better to work in london than Kishinev). This means that the whole rescuing thing is rather difficult (since the women tend not to want to go home and goverments don't wish to grant them leave to remain). Things were however worse in the past with a more significant amount of Sexual slavery going on although a fair amount of that was in Kosavo with the market being peacekeeping troops.Geni (talk) 03:09, 14 September 2011 (UTC)
Anti-Biotic Resistant Bacteria[edit]
I would probably mention this in the "not moral panic" section, considering that it is pretty fuckin' scary, is actually a real threat, and yet is so frequently written off, ignored or denied. Anybody else agree? Messiah of Doom- Unite with thy Oracle (talk) 13:41, 29 September 2013 (UTC)
Rearrange this article a bit[edit]
I like the idea behind this article
For the sake of clarity, I plan, after talk time to
- add Wiktionary definition of panic which in its current form does not include the word "irrational" and probably should
- add statement that panics, by definition have a sudden onset and "burn" out in a fairly short time
- add a section on what are not panics, but rather are endemic worries about society
- global warming would go here
- homophobia would go here
- antisemitism would go here
- add a section listing those instances were "nonsense becomes lethal"
- Salem witch trials
- Deep south lynching of negros

Is Gamergate a moral panic and what about global warming and the cold war?[edit]
Purebread notes there should be a clarification on what is and what is not a moral panic, as the implications of global warming does cause safety concerns for most scientists and hate crimes have previously been codified into law or had systemically lax investigations into them. Similarly trying to define whether the cold war was a series of safely contained proxy wars kept in a pocket or a potentially world shattering cause of legitimate concern for the bulletin of atomic scientists is a heavily contentious issue not helped by the name of it implying stability. I think given the death and rape threats, the harassment involved in gamergate would cause panic for most people in that situation, while the idea that anti sex radical feminists are trying to take away all the sexual content from video games and impose mandatory employment quotas for game development companies regardless of job skill is more in keeping with the other examples of moral panic. Momo and The Blue Whale[edit]
See the discussion presently at the Saloon Bar about Momo - currently surfacing in various newspapers respectable and red top, and the Whale - which makes reference to a game 'Miriam.'
Some passing mention here (as reference to such 'games' are likely to surface in the future)? Anna Livia (talk) 23:31, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
