Talk:Moral panic
Recent reverts[edit]
While I don't find the reasoning behind BoN's reverts all that valid, isn't there a point to be made that people are prone to overstating Russian bots on social media and also overlooking that a lot of nincompoops in social media are very honest? And isn't it a problem that some people who use Cyrillic do get vetted as bots by filters? Well, I still wouldn't put that discussion under "moral panic" article and neither are Russian bot shenanigans anything close resembling the Red Scare but where else can we talk about it, if we haven't covered so already? --It's-a me, LeftyGreenMario! 00:09, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- Collusion or no collusion, but the "Russian propaganda/interference" hype is reaching truly dangerous levels, with everything coming from Russia labeled as "toxic" (including cartoons), and the former U.S. national intelligence director making racist comments about Russians being genetically opposed to Western democracies (had it been any nation other than the Russians, he would have had to apologize or face adverse consequences). --93.71.126.15 (talk) 17:50, 31 March 2019 (UTC)
- moral panic or not, this highlights glaring problems with this article. the examples section is just far far to lengthy. examples should illustrative. it does not need to be exhaustive. why keep adding to this list constantly? why in most cases on the list there is commentary, no explanation, no reasoning given as to why it is a moral panic. some cases are such broad categories that they mostly likely conflate a whole variety of issues, some legitimate concerns, some not. all cases are entirely subjective. what makes them moral panics and not justifiable concerns? what levels of sensationalist press coverage were there? who is it stoking the fears? how much of what we are calling moral panics just hand waving away real concerns?
- its not helped that the rest of the article is piss poor. AMassiveGay (talk) 11:13, 1 April 2019 (UTC)
Definitions[edit]
To what extent are 'moral panics' actually '(fears of potential) immorality' panics, 'things are changing faster than I wish to change my mindset', 'extrapolation from something reasonable into something overblown and illogical (by those looking for eyeballs)', and 'my children are growing up and I am growing older and I do not care for it'? Huh?[edit]
Okay, who reverted my edit where I added a note dat explained dat Pokémon don't fully misrepresent evolution nor was the first JRPG to abuse the term?--Deli-delibirda! (talk) 09:37, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
- @Delibirda It seems that @Oxyaena reverted your edits. I think an explanation from Oxyaena's part would've been ideal, but I think your edit involved a lot of content removal, which you can probably explain. --It's-a me, LeftyGreenMario! 17:40, 21 December 2019 (UTC)
- I added a note. I think that RationalWiki thinks that Pokémon misrepresents evolution, which it does not do entirely. Plus, "evolving" in some JRPGs involves a character gaining a new form and becoming stronger. I think.--Deli-delibirda! (talk) 08:20, 22 December 2019 (UTC)
- Eh, sorry if I sounded ungrateful, I did not know ya had readded the note, hehe...--Deli-delibirda! (talk) 08:22, 22 December 2019 (UTC)

This article needs a clean up.[edit]
It seems people like to add or remove things from the list of examples as they please in anything they perceive as overblown, or alternatively not given attention enough. The establishment of something being a moral panic has a degree of contrary evidence to the claims of pop culture/media. For example, in reference to rainbow parties there was no documented cases of any such parties having occurred. In reference to human trafficking, many of the statistics used to track human trafficking include everything from parents without custody taking their kids, undocumented migrants being smuggled over the border, sometimes children simply being missing for more then a 24 hour period, etc. Which then inflates the idea of human trafficking being a widespread phenomena of coerced sex workers being smuggled around city to city. There is also the various hoaxes that go around Reddit about different "tips" human traffickers make in a parking lot about how they are going to kidnap you that Snopes debunks every once in a while. The Satanic Panic, the big daddy of all moral panics had the crucial detail of the FBI finding zero evidence of ritual abuse having happened, and some claims were even made in reference to have happened in basements that didn't even actually exist. We should probably do more to ensure that moral panics included on the list are actually evidenced as moral panics. I know it's hypocritical to make these claims while not providing sources myself in this talk page -- but this is a talk page, not the actual article. - Only Sort of Dumb (talk) 18:42, 12 November 2022 (UTC).
Conservativism is the biggest moral panic[edit]
One example: confederate flags which until the mid 2000's were used by Lynyrd Skynyrd at their concerts: [1] Sorry if I am found attacking your site, but you do the same to Conservapedia (where I do not even have an account yet). 2003:C3:3725:3000:1D3C:582:E055:43CD (talk) 12:31, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

Examples list[edit]
Do we really need it? GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 02:19, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
- I don’t think so tbh. I feel the article should focus more on the existing literature regarding moral panics. I think think the example list just invites people to add whatever they think people over-react to. You get people who want to add “mass shootings”, “hate crimes” or “incel violence” to the list simply because the probability of such events may be overstated, but arguably that is not necessarily what a moral panic is. I say axe it. - Only Sort of Dumb (talk) 03:06, 17 January 2023 (UTC)
