Please don't try to copypaste articles from Wikipedia again, doing so is in poor form and is not acceptable here. Plutocow (talk) 05:54, 11 June 2025 (UTC)
- And just altering it slightly doesn't make it OK! Fiji is gonna get removed! Scream!! (talk) 15:29, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- The purposes of RW are mainly:
- Analyzing and refuting pseudoscience and the anti-science movement;
Documenting the full range of crank ideas; Explorations of authoritarianism and fundamentalism; Analysis and criticism of how these subjects are handled in the media.
- NOT being a Baedeker for any country. Fiji is gonna get removed! Scream!! (talk) 16:16, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- The issue is that the current page doesn't bring anything much [or at all, really] to the table RationalWiki-wise. It's very generic, the sorts of thing you could pick up from any reasonable reference text, which you kind of highlight from your use of Britannica, the CIA Factbook and the World Bank DataBook as sources. Or, as Plutocow pointed out at the top, Wikipedia. To quote the 'What is RationalWiki page'

- "Articles on subjects which don't really fit into these missions are likely to be challenged and may be deleted! So before you start a new article, think about how it relates to the missions. If you're not sure, just ask: you could start a discussion in the Saloon bar or on the talk page of a related article, or make a new suggestion at the To Do List."
- "Most RationalWiki contributors enjoy Wikipedia, and we encourage people to use it for research, fun, or anything else that requires more encyclopedic and neutral articles. However, RationalWiki is not Wikipedia. We cannot and do not want to compete with Wikipedia — we are attempting to create something that is different but hopefully complementary to the projects started by the Wikimedia Foundation." [bolding mine].
- I am personally are a bit more lenient with pages which are not strictly speaking 'missional' - if they are useful. Which in Fiji's case right now, isn't much.
- What Scream is alluding to is not that they're going to come along and delete it right away, more that they will put the page on a proposal to be deleted [called an AfD for short]. Or someone else will nominate it. They are perfectly free to hold their opinions on this. KarmaPolice (talk) 17:27, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
- ADDENDUM: You point out correctly that a lot of other countries have their own pages, which is true. But not all of them are good. On my quick scout I would guess the United Arab Emirates one is a good example of a RationalWiki country page [though it could do with some improvement] for a 'small' country. Notice that it's written from the assumption that any person can go and read Wikipedia if they want generic information. KarmaPolice (talk) 17:39, 23 June 2025 (UTC)
Fiji draft[edit]
Hey so umm i was wondering if you could take a look or how we could decide when the Fiji article is ready to no longer be a draft? Theoneandonlylinguist09(talk)
- [Shunted convo to your page].
- First, will point out this is my personal opinion, not official RW policy or anything.
- Said opinion is; it's not ready yet, though you are moving in the right direction. Admittedly, the 'how to' guide here is a bit rubbish [which I plan to redo when I find the time] so I will quickly point out the major flaws in the current article.
- -Most of the article is still duplicated general information which RW does not need to cover. I have this rule of thumb; if Wikipedia et al have already covered it well, it doesn't need to be repeated here.
- -You don't do much with the bits of the article which are 'missional'. So Christianity is the official religion? What kind of Christianity? Is it loudly active in Fijian life? What kind of things do they take a stand on etc. You're allowed to reach such conclusions here at RW - unlike say, Wikipedia, where you cannot say anything without finding a reference to back you up. However, we do expect you to provide decent refs
- -There is a lot of 'missional' topics you don't cover. I know enough about the situation in that you could make mention of climate change, obesity, the brain-drain and tribal/ethnic tensions but as a rule you don't.
- -In short; the article generally leaves me with the feeling that the writer doesn't really know what they're actually writing about; just a hodge-podge of genericky stuff they're finding from other tertiary sources.
