David French (1969-) is a New York Times columnist and conservative political activist.[1]

French is a bit of an odd ball in the modern right-wing movement as he is a believer that, although he may find something to be morally objectionable, he doesn't inherently find said something worthy of being banned. For example, although from a religious standpoint he believes that marriage "is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, sealed before God, and breakable only on the limited conditions God has outlined in his Word," he is willing to understand all people of all worldviews are still worthy of equal treatment under the law, and therefore he supports the legal right to same-sex marriage.[2]

This basic understanding that sometimes moral and legal opinions should be separated led to his now infamous rivalry with Sohrab Ahmari, who dubbed a refusal to use authoritarian power "David French-ism" and denounced it in 2019.[3]
