kudos to Susan[edit]
First of all, major kudos to Susan! That must've been some hard work.
However, the list's source strikes me as complicated and redundant. If nobody minds, I'd try to recreate it with templates and wikitables.
I was thinking along the lines of {{tlist | name=My Template | para=many | instr=Yes | uses=This | usedby=That | notes=The notes}}
Then we wouldn't have to do the thing with the precise % values each time, and we could check how it would react to other values. Just a suggestion, I'm not trying to belittle Susan's hard work or anything! --Sid 15:14, 31 January 2008 (EST)
Heh! Should have done tis ages ago. If you can make it look better Sid - be my guest - I drew it in Dreamweaver & copied across - wikitables leave me in a bit of a panic. (I can't see the tables on my screen) :-(
Thanx for the input! SusanPurrrrrrr 15:22, 31 January 2008 (EST)
(I like the "Instructions?" column - it shows which might need attention.SusanPurrrrrrr)
- I'll see what I can do then! :) Formatting and technical tinkering is what I like - it's compiling all the data that would have made me scream XD --Sid 15:30, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- Automation would be cool - then when things are deleted the list changes. Ditto for any alterations to the templates. Or additions. Not sure we need to run around deleting these things like crazy, though. They don't really use many bytes just sitting there. Although, I suppose if a template is 1. not used and 2. not annotated (no instructions) then it could be deemed useless clutter on the "all templates" listing. human 15:49, 31 January 2008 (EST)
MOVING[edit]
Sid, I'm gonna move it to Help space. OK? SusanPurrrrrrr 16:53, 31 January 2008 (EST)
Useful?[edit]
As handy as this might be, 1. it's really hard to dig through if you're looking for something, and 2. updating it will be brutal - who is going to add things when they make them up? Just being pessimistic... human 17:32, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- Also, while editing it (by section), you can't see the parameter names to insert them. human 17:34, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- I'd like to see this addressed - it's a pity we didn't leave the unused params in the body for future use; we could always add the missing ones into the first tmeplate in each section so they are easy to copy... or put a commented out blank template line at the beginning of each... hmm, that would be easy, I think I might do it. human 12:55, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- heh! I love starting something that makes people work while I sit watching with a biccy & a coffee. SusanPurrrrrrr 13:23, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- This is work? I just find what works, then do global "search & replace"ments in another application... Hah! human 13:25, 3 February 2008 (EST)
- I done did what I said above - put a commented out list of the column parameter names at the top of each section. It took 31.4 seconds ;) human 16:50, 3 February 2008 (EST)

ABC[edit]
I suggest breaking this into individual letter sections. human 17:34, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- So I did. Why do the header links all go one section shy of where they should go? human 17:57, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- Snortle! That's really kept you two busy! Never seen so much action on one page (except for TK related of course). SusanPurrrrrrr 21:07, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- All I had to do was keep pasting, and type in the alphabet one letter at a time. Now I am adding friggin instructions to arcane templates, and preparing to burn and salt the earth HoG once trolled upon.

- And anyway, just exactly how much time did it take you to assemble v. 1.0? human 22:02, 31 January 2008 (EST)
- About 15 hours! It fills in thinking time doing something so relatively mindless. Seriously though it might be of use if it gets some templates instructed & used correctly. Think of it as your gift to
RationalWikihumanity and walk around feeling smug for a couple of days at your altruism. :-p SusanPurrrrrrr 22:13, 31 January 2008 (EST)

- 15 hours? Ouch! And if anything, it nicely documents which templates are simply not needed or too obscure to be of any real use - while also showing a few gems that might deserve to be used more often. --Sid 22:25, 31 January 2008 (EST)
Sid: it takes me about 5 minutes to load a page, open in edit mode, close it & reload another page, during about 4 of those minutes I'm doing something else, so it's only about 3 hours actual work on it. I'm up anyway and would have RW open so why not? SusanPurrrrrrr 22:34, 31 January 2008 (EST)
header, clear[edit]
I asked "Why do the header links all go one section shy of where they should go?", and the problem apparently was something to do with the "clear" tags, which were needed to make the next section not wrap funny next to the previous table. I undid the "align=left" at the table starting template and moved the closing /center tag to after each table, getting rid of the "clear" tags (/center has the same effect, as would any text - I discovered this by accident when I left a pasted-in url below on table). Now the header links work right, and the table centering really doesn't affect anything, except to make things look slightl better.
But I'd really like to know why the "clear" tag messes up the header linking. human 12:53, 3 February 2008 (EST)
The red image template thing[edit]
Why not list all the image permission templates next to each other under "i"? It makes for one-click shopping... Also, I suspect it would be easy to force an extra table row to act as a header for them. human 13:46, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
- 'cause I'm knackered after importing 'em. Feel free :) SusanG 13:49, 7 April 2008 (EDT)
Busted?[edit]
Is there something busted between "A" and "B"?--Bobbing up 10:56, 27 June 2008 (EDT)
- Someone had put the actual template in the "Description" space - can't see who. ContribsTalk 11:14, 27 June 2008 (EDT)
- It seems to be unbusted now. :-) The reason I was on this page was looking up the unsigned template. Errrr. This is probably a stupid question - but how does it work? --Bobbing up 11:19, 27 June 2008 (EDT)

The centering doesn't work. ħuman 16:56, 27 June 2008 (EDT)
Tlist[edit]
(the template that does the template list): Does anyone think another column "Cat" to show the category into which the page a template's transcluded on is put in is desirable? (God! that's a horrid sentence) (Any "includeonly" Cat on the template)

Replacing[edit]
I've been annoyed by this page for a long time. It contains a lot of obscure useless templates and doesn't list some other useful templates.
User:Carpetsmoker/Template list is a WIP replacement, listing only actually useful templates (based on Special:MostLinkedTemplates).
Assuming no one objects, I'll overwrite this page with my version as soon as I've found the time and inclination to finish it. Carpetsmoker (talk) 21:06, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- You'll find that it becomes out of date quite quickly when folk don't maintain it. Pippa (talk) 21:17, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
- Most of the important templates will probably stay the same (e.g.
{{quotebox}}
,{{Sources needed}}
), etc). And a few omissions is okay, but this list is damn near unusable (at least, I found it to be when I first came here); you can't see the forest for the trees. Carpetsmoker (talk) 23:45, 11 January 2016 (UTC)
