2025 RationalWiki 'Oregon Plan' Fundraiser

There is no RationalWiki without you. We are a small non-profit with no staff—we are hundreds of volunteers who document pseudoscience and crankery around the world every day. We will never allow ads because we must remain independent. We cannot rely on big donors with corresponding big agendas. We are not the largest website around, but we believe we play an important role in defending truth and objectivity.

Fighting pseudoscience isn't free.

Brief note on the Hadean[edit]

The Hadean is only informal, since the ICS doesn't officially recognize it as a valid geologic interval. Although, something interesting was going on during the "Hadean", given that abiogenesis must have occurred during it, never mind the giant asteroids that repeatedly hit the Earth 4.2-3.8 Ga, in which case if life had originated prior to the Late Heavy Bombardment then it would have been wiped out due to repeated asteroid collisions in the Neohadean-Eoarchean eras. It was also the time when the Earth's first atmosphere and oceans originated. Another hypothesis was that life was seeded from space during this period, which I find unlikely because of the lack of evidence in favor of panspermia. Another variant of this hypothesis is directed panspermia, an even unlikelier event in which extraterrestrials "seeded" life on Earth, which brings the need for even more evidence for this claim.--Palaeonictis (talk) 04:15, 28 November 2014 (UTC)

Missionality[edit]

I looked over the page. How exactly will a skeptical reader benefit from an article on the geologic timeline? In its current state, the article reads like an encyclopedia.—Hamburguesa con queso con un cara Spinning-Burger.gif (talkstalk) 04:51, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Missionality includes science-related pages that offer supporting information for other pages. The timeline is important with regard to evolution/creationism. Bongolian (talk) 04:53, 20 April 2017 (UTC)

Silurian hypothesis[edit]

The browser came up with a link, there are many more references, and the other place has an article. Is it RW-able? (And how long before it gets entangled with the Silicon trees? Anna Livia (talk) 22:38, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

There are no indications an advanced civilization existed during the Silurian, and the biota present then were primarily aquatic, no civilization could've even formed. Oxyaena Harass 11:15, 15 June 2019 (UTC)
