Missionality[edit]

So, Cosmik added the "questionable missionality" tag on this article, and I'm a little inclined to agree for now. After all, we don't know Youngkin's governance style yet -- whether he'll be VA's Abbot/DeSantis, or if he'll be more muted like MD governor Larry Hogan. Thoughts? I think it should stay for now due to his high relevance. If he isn't missional, it will become apparent within a few months/years. If necessary, in January 2026 he won't be governor. --American time change coming up November 7, Andrew5 (talk) 15:35, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
I think this article is poor because it doesn't go into his racist dogwhistling regarding CRT etc., which is probably the most missional aspect of him. Plutocow (talk) 15:54, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
I spent ~45 minutes collecting data from multiple Wikipedia articles to put in - and I couldn't find a single thing about it. I think that that aspect isn't notable enough to be included within Wikipedia, which also probably suggests it isn't notable enough to be included here, which of course could indicate he isn't missional enough.
We are not Wikipedia, and there are multiple reliable sources that go into this aspect of his campaign. The fact that this was widely derived from Wikipedia is likely why it doesn't really fit in with RW's tone right now. Plutocow (talk) 15:58, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
He may be notable now, but what about in two weeks or two months from now? He doesn't appear to be a loony caricature like Roy Moore or have a history of making bizarre statements like, say, Rick Perry. He seems to be more or less a run-of-the-mill Republican. Despite all the brouhaha ken and his sock army are stirring up, in the big picture, we're not PoliticsWiki. That's why I flagged this article as potentially off-mission. —cosmikdebris talk stalk 16:21, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
As the winner of a Governor race, he will have notability for at least a few years. If he lost we wouldn’t be here, but he won. Glenn youngkin will be the 74th governor of Virginia unless something happens to him. Also, I am going to be pretty busy IRL for…at least 7 months. The reason I seemingly make so many edits is mainly assigning article ratings and doing quick fixes, but I don’t have the time to really sit down, spend 3 hours going through news sources and whatnot because…I don’t have the 3 hours. But no, I couldn’t find a single thing in my (admittedly narrow) google search.
What we could do, however, is make an entire article covering the 2021 elections and merge bits of this in. It would be similar to 2018 midterm elections. This is a better idea because, we could include the Democrats side of the story, the New Jersey stuff, and potentially even info on the California recall and the legislative elections, although if we do a 2022 midterm article it might be better to merge it into that, since we don’t have one for 2017. Either way though, reformatting this for a whole article on the elections is a compromise I would be willing to make. Andrew5 mobile (talk) 16:49, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
(ec)I'm never really a fan of notability requirements because the question always arises "notability to whom?" Still, the article in its current state isn't terribly missional and only vaguely talks about his campaign and views without offering any real analysis or arguments and misses out on important information, so in its current state it is more like a Wikipedia article than a RW one (which is why I added that category). Plutocow (talk) 16:57, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
It isn’t a question of notability, it is a question of relevance to our mission. As I said before, this is not PoliticsWiki. And what, specifically, do the 2021 US elections have to our mission? —cosmikdebris talk stalk 17:16, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
Then you could make that argument to 2018 or 2014. Still, it has a small link to points 1 and 2 because a fair amount relates to COVID-19, climate change and has narrow links to authoritarianism. --American time change coming up November 7, Andrew5 (talk) 17:22, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
Which does nothing to address my initial observation that this article, the article on Glenn Youngkin, appears to be completely off-mission. —cosmikdebris talk stalk 18:04, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
How do you feel about my compromise idea? --Andrew5 mobile (talk) 18:16, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
I don't have any strong opinion at all on an article focused on the 2021 midterm elections. For those who are interested in starting up an article on this subject and doing the research, I would strongly recommend starting in the draft space. It should be quickly apparent if the topic is off-mission by taking a look at the draft.
In general, however, I believe that RationalWiki editors at this time place way too much emphasis on political topics of questionable missionality. Yet another article on yet another republicrat or demolican that no one will recognize in two years and no one cares about is not a good use of RationalWiki's resources. —cosmikdebris talk stalk 18:30, 4 November 2021 (UTC)

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── This is where I’d go that it is still going to be of interest and people will care about in two years. Four? Then I’d agree with you.Andrew5 mobile (talk) 18:52, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
