Talk:Great Depression
"The Great Depression was the largest economic down-turn in the history of the United States." - shouldn't read "the world"? ħuman 16:14, 13 October 2008 (EDT)
- An argument could probably be made that economic activity during the Black Plague or the "fall of Rome" or some such was much worse...but it was definitely international. Researcher 22:49, 14 October 2008 (EDT)
- Thanks, you fixed it. ħuman 02:18, 15 October 2008 (EDT)
- Unfortunately, the rest of the article continues the same American-centric bias, but I don't know or care enough to fix it. Researcher 18:29, 15 October 2008 (EDT)
- Thanks, you fixed it. ħuman 02:18, 15 October 2008 (EDT)
I basically rewrote the entire thing because it was kind of sparse/lacked goat/whatever. If we're going to have a GD topic, might as well make the main page thorough.Nebuchadnezzar (talk) 20:46, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Humans are not rational actors[edit]
People, at least everyone not a sociopath or narcissist, are not motivated by pure self interest. Well, everyone except economists, that is. Vee (talk) 06:46, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Why is EPIC crankery?[edit]
If anything it sounds like typical democratic socialism. Vee (talk) 08:23, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
Am I being too technical here?[edit]
I don't know if someone is actually reading my edits on this page, but one of my biggest concerns here is that the language I'm using on the article is not understandable for the layperson, especially on the "causes" section. It is? GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 18:03, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- You mention a bunch of terms and events in Keynes vs Friedman that are only introduced in later sections; the fact that there was a recession (and its cause), what a nominal interest rate is (or at least what a real interest rate is, nominal can be inferred from there), etc. Christopher (talk) 18:37, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- I have no idea what a means of payment multiplier is. Christopher (talk) 18:38, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
- Now that you said, I think this whole section the very problematic. I wrote it after the others. Will keep what you said in mind. GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 18:42, 7 November 2022 (UTC)
We have a the template for Amerocentric articles, right?[edit]
Unfortunately, I don't know jack about the Great Depression in Europe and in the rest of the world. If someone wants to write about the Depression elsewhere, be my guest, because, unfortunately, I'm not qualified for writing about it. That being said, I believe I did a good job so far explaining the Depression in America. GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 02:37, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- I'll take a crack at the worldwide impact, at least for some of the other great powers. For instance: USSR won big, Germany got Hitler, and UK never had a good economy post-WWI to begin with. Chef Moosolini’s Ristorante ItalianoMake a Reservation 02:47, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, rock and roll. The USSR is a very interesting case that I'd love to know more, since while their economy grew, they also faced one of the worst famines in history during the period. GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 02:56, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
Do we need the listicle on "crankery" here?[edit]
It's uncited and ugly to look at. Plus it doesn't explain why some of the items listed are crankery. Vee (talk) 03:07, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
- @Vee we don't. I'll remove it. GeeJayKWhere all evil dwells Where every lie is true 16:56, 15 November 2022 (UTC)
