Comparison to Christianity[edit]
Why not explain Mecca in terms of its own significance instead of comparing it to Christianity - especially when the comparison is weak (Christians aren't obliged to face any particular city when they pray, or to go on a pilgrimage to that city...) PFoster 16:37, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
snark[edit]
So, when is snark ok, and when is it not?--WaitingforGodot 16:45, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
- Depends on the snark, and who you're snarking about, in my books. In this context, the Muslims have enough non-Muslim Americans and Euros snarking on them that we don't really need to add to it unless it's to bring something really new to the game...PFoster 16:48, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
- Now, now. That's a bit of a double standard, isn't it? --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 16:56, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
- Yup. and I'll stand by it for a number of reasons. Think of it as Affirmative Action Snark. PFoster 16:58, 22 July 2008 (EDT)
- That's a bit disappointing. I had rather hoped for Equal Opportunity Snark. --AKjeldsenCum dissensie 17:07, 22 July 2008 (EDT)

How do you face Mecca on a ball shaped earth?[edit]
I mean if you are exactly antipodal to Mecca, how should you pray as a good Muslim? Avengerofthe BoN (talk) 21:58, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- How many inhabitants of Tematangi are Muslim? (IOW, who even cares? There are only about five dozen of them, religion unspecified, probably Catholic.) CamelCasePragmatist (talk) 22:08, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

- Inquiring modern minds want to know which direction orbiting astronauts must face, and what constitutes a day for them. Five times a day, remember... CamelCasePragmatist (talk) 22:24, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Same problem on the moon (and how the fuck is a Jew supposed to do kiddush levana, when he is on the "levana"???).--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 22:37, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, I am sure there is some Rabbi somewhere who has actually dealt with said issue. And another Rabbi who vehemently disagrees.... But as no country seems to be close to putting people (let alone Jews) on the moon any time soon, the issue is largely academic... Aren't there also orthodox Sabbath light switches? Avengerofthe BoN (talk) 23:35, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- I heard about them, but most orthodox go for securing the light switch in one position with crepe tape or covering them, AFAIK.--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 23:40, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- They have sabbath phones, I know that. --"Paravant" Talk & Contribs 23:49, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
- Shabbat phones? That'd be something new to me. How'd they work.--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 00:00, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- Operating phones on the Sabbath?!? Blasphemy! 142.124.55.236 (talk) 23:51, 10 November 42015 AQD (UTC)
- For any sufficiently orthodox Jew, it is (as is, for the really, really ultra-orthodox ones having a smartphone or a phone (plan) capable of sending sms).--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 00:00, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- Aren't there also orthodox Jews that say you can't enter the temple mount until the temple is built? (Which raises the question how you are supposed to build the temple...) Avengerofthe BoN (talk) 00:04, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- Well, according to what I heard, around the time, when the messiah arrives, they will find a red heifer necessary for the purification ritual to enter the Temple Mount.--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 17:33, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- this and This --"Paravant" Talk & Contribs 00:21, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- That looks more like an emergency-measure-thing, tbh, but that probably depends on what strand of orthodoxy one is.--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 17:33, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- I thought "danger to live and limb" trumps all religious laws? Or is there also disagreement on that one? Avengerofthe BoN (talk) 18:02, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- It does, but technologies such as these are developed to minimize the needed violation of these religious laws.--Arisboch ☞✍☜☞✉☜ ∈)☼(∋ 18:07, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- I see. I always liked this aspect about Judaism... It being a religion of lifvfvfvfe instead of a death cult like Christianity, Egyptian Paganism or Islam (in its Djihadi form) Avengerofthe BoN (talk) 18:26, 11 November 2015 (UTC)
- You mean "danger to life and limb" perchance? 142.124.55.236 (talk) 18:06, 11 November 42015 AQD (UTC)

- To the basic issue of religion in space and round objects: Face Earth or your best guess as to which direction Earth is, Face mecca by imagining the stupid black square and praying in tht direction and you base time from where you launched off at, atleast if you're from Malaysia. As for being on the exact oppsite side of Earth, I imagine it is just like the rules for prayer while -inside- the Kabba, you can make your own choice on the matter as to direction to go. --"Paravant" Talk & Contribs 22:38, 10 November 2015 (UTC)
