Needed?[edit]

Firstly do we need this page when it could serviced by the drug pages themselves. Secondly I would not class MDMA as a psychedelic- it’s primary function is more of an amphetamine. It has some ability to cause hallucinations but not as its primary function. Ace303, 808, 909 08:12, 6 April 2021 (UTC)

As to your first point, all the referenced psychedelics could be put together in a single page. It might make for a better article. As to your second point, MDMAWikipedia is referred to as a psychedelic on the WP page, "The variability of the induced altered state is lower compared to other psychedelics.", and it does bind to the 5-HT receptors, as do other psychedelics. I have no personal experience with MDMA, but I do understand how you think that it's experientially different from what I've read. Bongolian (talk) 17:01, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
Well I do have a lot of experience with many many substances and I would never class MDMA as a psychedelic. Ace303, 808, 909 01:05, 7 April 2021 (UTC)

Why does the "psychosis" of psychadelic drugs lead so many people to monism?[edit]

If it is even medical psychosis, as many acid casualties are startlingly lucid. But do believe it is a form of "mimicked" psychosis.--Back2theroots34 (talk) 05:15, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Same reason methheads think others are watching them or cokeheads think people are watching them 6 hours in on a binge. Mind altering drugs... Alter the mind. This phenomenon isn't even unique to psychadelics. Serotonin is weird. You ever look at Ketamine addicts develop their own (usually suicidal) mystical set of beliefs? Drugs are just weird. People who like to do this stuff don't even always come out believing in monism. It has a lot to do with the culture you grew up in too.--Spoony (talk) 05:52, 12 April 2022 (UTC)

Needs a section on the woo surrounding it[edit]

Psychedelics are becoming popular therapeutically and many new age ideas are being merged with psychedelics. Even Michael Stevens of Vsauce fame started to tout them after taking Ayahuasca and making a mind field episode about it (even specifically saying it's not New Age).--2friedeggs (talk) 16:49, 18 June 2022 (UTC)

I mean it is important to note that the use of Ayahuasca pre-dates the new age movement substantially, and the new age embrace of it is really a cultural appropriation...which like....is sort of their jam. - Only Sort of Dumb (talk) 17:22, 18 June 2022 (UTC).
That's generally how a llot of westerners are introduced to psychedelics in a non-recreational matter though (somewhat thankfully) therapeutic settings are starting to change that. But people are still first learning about these things from say, the likes of Erowid and take it from me that someone looking for drugs is very unlikely to not take the information on there at face value.--2friedeggs (talk) 06:47, 19 June 2022 (UTC)
No doubt, I do think we should draw the pseudoscience and alt med associations within americanized psychedelic drug culture, and the new age draw to psychs —- but I still think that attention should be drawn to how stuff like ayahuasca and peyote have been disassociated from their original indigenous uses and cultural context. Erowid is all a part of that larger colionial context. - Only Sort of Dumb (talk) 07:00, 19 June 2022 (UTC).
