Support your local Mei[edit]
Good evening citizen. You have been selected for showing interest in your local Mei. Were you aware that you can show your support for the troops the Mei by sporting this userbox on your userpage? It's very pretty. This Christmas Mei will go hungry. Please help feed a hungry Mei today. Who said anything about fair?![edit]
I noticed that's one of your sig links, is it a reference to God Knows by Joseph Heller? Just wondering because it seems everyone's read Catch-22 (or at least should) but no one's read God Knows, which is sad because it has some great parts. The parts about 'No desires are ever satisfied...' and 'In that disparity of our desires was Absolom's victory; I loved him, and he did not love me' come to mind. Clepper is fallible 19:02, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
- Actually, that part of my sig is entirely a coincidence, I never read that particular book. I did read Catch-22 back in the day, but I have to admit that I did not too particually enjoy it (perhaps because I was in middle school, I did not fully understand the book), and I still have never gotten around to picking Catch-22 up again. Thank you[edit]
Thank you for extending your invitation; I would like to say that your essay about your de-conversion was a very good read. Seeing as I've always been non-theistic, it was nice to hear about how someone can overcome what I personally see as a non-rational belief system. It gives me hope! :) Clepper 13:43, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- Heh, well thanks for the compliment. I don't so much see it as overcoming a belief system, more of a growing out of such. From my current perspective, Religion only serves as a means of comfort and self-assurance, so from that perspective, combined with my current disbelief in any sort of god, religion is irrelevant.
- I will admit that I took interest in your recent tirade in the Saloon Bar. Back when I was 17, I already had at least a vauge nattering idea as to what I wanted to do, (Cognitive science, which is what I am doing), but whatever you decide, best of luck in it. Javasca₧ my sig is my own opiate! 14:14, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- 'Growing out of it' is probably a better way of putting it. Heh, my tirade... I debated whether or not putting the fact that I'm 17 in there. I was afraid people would, and they probably will, employ some ageism, and not without good reason. 'There goes another teenager waxing philosophical...', ya know what I mean. Like pre-teens talking about 'true love' or something. But despite my age, I'd be surprised if people older and wiser than I didn't have some of the same feelings of guilt about not giving enough back to the community which gave so much to them. Cognitive science! I admit there are many sciences appealing to me, but if I was to be a scientist, it would probably be in that particular field. We understand a lot about how the universe works, and a lot of that information (especially astronomical science) probably isn't too useful in our lives, but cognitive science offers up more relevant answers to 'human' questions. Thank you for the good luck, and likewise! Clepper 14:33, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- Stitches, not Bandages. From where I look at things, that is how solutions can be divided. Contributing to charities to alleviate problems is a bandage solution, it covers the problem up, makes it more managable, but when that bandage comes off the gaping wound, it is still there, festering rather nicely. A stitch-it-up soultion would be a law aimed at fixing the problem, rather than covering it. (That is not to say charity is without benefits, I shudder to imagine the terrible state millions of people would be in without it!)
- Anyway, I personally am opposed to "ageism" as a way of countering a point. Even kids can raise some very valid ideas.
- And as for Cognitive Science, that is also one of the reasons I am interested in it, the "relevant answers to 'human' questions", in addition to my heavy fascination with psychology and programming, made Cognitive Science a natural choice for me. ĴάΛäšςǍ₰ do do da de do da de 14:41, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
- "Stitches, not Bandages" is a great way of putting it. I hope one day I'll be able to get a hang of that kind of analogy. It seems every religious leader has had a gift for parables. I guess it may come down to cognitive science and programming being the same thing, with our conscious and subconcious thought processes just being nature's own version of source code, compilers, etc. That's just a hare-brained idea, though, my knowledge is pretty much limited to the Wiki Gods unfortunately. I have a question about cognitive science. Why do we view things as more aesthetically pleasing? Not just the aesthetics of the opposite sex, which could easily be explained as a natural byproduct of evolution, but the aesthetics of things like art or music or landscapes? I can't understand why there would be any reason for the human mind to prefer some images over others, and yet obviously we do. Clepper 17:41, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
