The Matrix is a 1999 cyberpunk action film written and directed by Lily and Lana Wachowski and starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss.[1][2] Inspired in parts by various other science fiction novels and films, including William Gibson's Neuromancer,[3] as well as martial arts films and Lewis Caroll's Alice in Wonderland, The Matrix is now considered one of the most influential science fictions films of all time.[4] The plot centers on Neo, portrayed by Reeves, a messiah figure who discovers that the world is a simulation run by artificial intelligence that he must defeat in order to free humanity from the titular Matrix. The film utilized groundbreaking special effects work for its time,[5] and has served as the inspiration for dozens of other pieces of dystopian and sci-fi media. The film has three sequels, along with a host of other media including comics and video games.[6]

Despite being made by two leftist trans women, the film has been co-opted by online right-wing individuals and groups, particularly because of the film's MacGuffins of the red and blue pills.
