I don't get the joke[edit]

I don't understand this comment. Did Americans ever refer to England/Britain as "French"? Why? WéáśéĺóíďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 14:26, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

It's a bit of a joke. Anyone who can speak english with an accent is a damn frenchie... like anyone who speaks spanish is mexican. or whatever. IE: Idiots are idiots. I felt it went along with the concept that many people (esp. stupid americans) don't know the difference between "UK" and "England" in that they also don't really know the difference between "England" and "Europe" I guess it wasn't as funny as I thought it was. My bad. Quaru (talk) 14:28, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Once knew a guy from Birmingham who'd gone travelling in the US & Canada. Folks kept asking if he was Australian or S.African, since he sounded so different from what they thought an English accent ought to sound like. WéáśéĺóíďWeaselly.jpgMethinks it is a Weasel 14:44, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm Australian and the Engrish keep asking if I'm Sarth Effriken. (Saffa friends boggle at this too.) - David Gerard (talk) 14:52, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Yeah. Most people suck at accents. A girl I went to University with went to Maine, and was accused of being Canadian, since that's apparently what they associated a mid-western accent with. (Ontario is between where I live and Maine, if that helps any..) When I first watched "Brazil" with a group of friends, about 1/3 though, most of them demanded we put on the subtitles, as they couldn't understand what they were saying. But as I said, the joke was based on me being a parody of a racist, stupid america. But if you don't get it, then I just come across as a stupid, racist american. But the joke is just that we don't really know where Britain is, so why would we care if we call it Britain, UK, England, or France? I mean, if you want to be all godless and liberal, with your orgies and drug dens, then be my guest. Just stay waaayyy over there in Paris Germany Nu Z-land Mexico. Guessing accents can be entertaining. I was a party about a month ago and I was talking to some girl with an accent and asked her, "are you American?" "No, I'm Canadian," she replied politely. I laughed and said "I bet you get that a lot," to which she replied "yeah." Then I couldn't think of anything else to say, so I ran off. SJ Debaser 15:56, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Religion and atheism[edit]

I hope Godot is right that 40% in England are atheists. Still we need a citation. Proxima Centauri (talk) 18:09, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Right now the article also says that 71% of the population is Christian, so something's up. Balaam (talk) 18:24, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
The trick is, people are reporting differently. If you read the article PC linked to, about the likelyhood of atheists overtaking theists, it admits that many of those atheists self report as christians when listing "what is your religion". Wikipedia, and Religious Tolerance, among others all say that numbers report to larger than 100%, and that the reason is simple. People are nominally christian, but they have become "non-believers" so it matters what questions are asked. by the way, and fyi, when you ask people "mark one: xian, jewish, athist" they are less likely to say atheist than "xian, jewish, non-theist". just an interesting fact about labels. --Green mowse.pngGodot She was a venus demilo in her sister's jeans 21:20, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Sport[edit]

How can you not state that England invented the concept and game of cricket! Evidence of mental illness? And rugby - basically a blood sport worse than bullfighting. And of course it is soccer not bleeding football. I think that a mention should be made about how us English are honorable gentlemen which is why we are so fuckin useless at all the sports we invent. (Diving foreign bastards have ruined the Premiership. It used to be a man's game http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=V8kxMnc5KUs )Dirk Steele (talk) 19:28, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Now aside from your strange schedule for a Brit, I have further evidence that you are not British--Just relax, and stay funny (talk) 19:39, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
Actually we are shit at on-pitch fighting too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP1eDrI-ZI8 Why oh why did we not invent a sport like American Football or even baseball where we could be world champions despite being rubbish? It is just not cricket sir. Dirk Steele (talk) 20:03, 11 December 2012 (UTC)

Many games can be described in one sentence (Golf - put balls in holes in as few shots as possible'; snooker 'balls in holes in the right order in as few shots as possible'; British football 'more goals than the other side, do not annoy the referee and the offside rule is badly designed': cricket is one of the few games not so easily described (with additions for eg Bramble Bank cricket).

There is also 'Shrovetide football' and similar games. Anna Livia (talk) 14:03, 28 October 2024 (UTC)
