Talk:Transphobia and public restrooms
A humorous and fortunately temporary consequence of expanding unisex bathroom access is that, from observing current trends, men will initially avoid them more than women do, primarily because they do not want to be the dreaded "bathroom stalker". This interesting gender divide stems from the fact that men tend to be considerably more prudish, tense, and evasive when attending public bathrooms while women are not so averse to social interaction. Generally a male user will be more uncomfortable than a female one not because they themselves feel threatened, but are rather concerned that the woman will be the threatened one. This occurrence is admittedly based on simple observation of newly converted unisex bathrooms having a noticeably higher volume of female users than male ones, as well as accounts from small population samples, and may not apply everywhere.
Unfortunately this is where the anxieties of Transphobia stem from both fronts. Men just tend to regard public restrooms as being a tense and awkward place from the very beginning, while the "bathroom stalker" fear is really more of the general anxieties about Rape culture being projected onto a minority group. — Unsigned, by: Kaleidostorm / talk / contribs
Roseanne Barr[edit]
There's a part of the article that says "Roseanne Barr, of all people" as if it's a surprise she'd be a source of transphobia on the bathroom issue. It's really not, she has a long history of general transphobic douchery. 81.110.112.179 (talk) 21:59, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
- Well I think the point is clearly that it's a surprise because Roseanne Barr is seen as a liberal who should know better rather than it's a surprise because if you know Roseanne Barr's stance on trans-issues you wouldn't expect it. I'm not sure if it's necessarily a great point to make, since most view points have people from all over the political spectrum. But in any case, by now, with Roseanne Barr's apparent love-fest with Trump, it's maybe not a good example point blank. Frankly I think it may be better to use TERFs since of course most of them are fairly liberal, but at least some embrace such viewpoints. Nil Einne (talk) 12:13, 9 January 2020 (UTC)
- Have to agree with the BoN here. Roseanne Barr cannot be seen as a liberal after her history of racism and support for Trump. Better examples are Graham Linehan and JK Rowling, and I have edited accordingly. CogitoNotStirred (via telepathy) (talk) 03:37, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
Comic[edit]
I feel like this should be featured somewhere in here. However I'm not sure what the community attitude is: include it under fair use, or just go with a link? --Ymir (talk) 23:23, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
"Furthermore, the idea that someone might claim to be trans just to get into the restroom of the opposite sex is beyond ludicrous. The stigma against trans people is extreme; nobody would willingly take that stigma on just to exploit a legal loophole."[edit]
what about the Hambrook-incident https://torontosun.com/2014/02/26/predator-who-claimed-to-be-transgender-declared-dangerous-offender ? A person pretending to be transgender in order to gain access to womans shelters for the purpose of rape. --84.61.76.252 (talk) 09:49, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
- I'm not one of the users with a big profile on this issue so don't take it from me. But I guess the line should be changed to " ... almost no cis male rapist would ..."Bob"Life is short and (insert adjective)" 16:14, 16 September 2020 (UTC)
Alexa[edit]
In the section about her death there's a link to the police brutality article. Yet, I can't see anything like that in the source for her death, if this was a case of police brutality the reference should be changed to one that confirms it to be the case. YouGov survey data for UK instances of transphobia[edit]
https://yougov.co.uk/society/articles/43194-where-does-british-public-stand-transgender-rights-1 Admittedly this is for 2022, which showed a souring of opinions since 2020, though with only two years difference I think its still relevant to seeing the trends for transphobia within the last decade. If you look at the views of people on bathroom access, you can clearly see the transphobic slant where there's an obvious bump in concern for transwomen accessing the women's bathroom compared to the concern for transmen using the men's bathroom. I think there's a pretty clear explanation why (transphobia) that fits well with this article. BumblingBuffoon (talk) 14:00, 18 March 2024 (UTC)
